CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Duke fell to Miami in straight sets (22-25, 11-25, 15-25) Friday evening in Knight Sports Complex to close out the 2024 season.
Offensively, Duke was led by
Ngozi Iloh with nine kills while
Taylor Williams and
Kerry Keefe tallied six and five, respectively. Iloh hit .562 percent with nine kills and no errors on 16 swings.
Setter
Grace Penn dished 16 of the Blue Devils' 23 assists while
Nikki Underwood led the team with seven digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke was off to a strong start in the first set, scoring four of the first six points to take an early lead. Miami eventually evened the score at 7-7 before taking over the lead.
- A pair of kills and an ace pushed the Hurricanes ahead, 20-17, but the Blue Devils fought back with back-to-back kills from Keefe and Iloh to pull within one, 23-22. However, a Blue Devil service error and kill from Miami's Ashley Carr sealed the first set victory for the Hurricanes, 25-22.
- The Blue Devils again started strong in the second set, using a 4-0 run to create a 5-2 advantage. Miami responded with seven straight points to regain the lead, 11-7. The Hurricanes continued to find their momentum on offense and ran away with the lead to secure the second set, 25-11.
- After a tight start to the third set with six ties and three lead changes, Miami used a 10-2 run to extend its lead to 21-11. The Blue Devils battled to the end, fighting off match point with a kill from Iloh, ace from Rachel Richardson and Hurricanes attacking error before Miami's Nyah Anderson registered the final kill to claim the third set, 25-15, and complete the sweep of Duke.
NOTES
- The Blue Devils close out the season with a 10-21 overall record and a 6-14 mark in ACC play.
- Ngozi Iloh registered a team-best nine kills and finished the match with a .562 hitting percentage – her best of the season.
- She has hit .500 or better on four occasions this season, including against Princeton (.500), North Carolina (.500) and Notre Dame (.522).
- Grace Penn tallied 16 assists on the night, marking her 24th match this season with at least 15 dimes.
- Breonna Goss and Taylor Williams combined for Duke's lone block of the night.
