DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke field hockey team earned one of eight at-large selections and will begin 2024 NCAA Championship action eight miles away in Chapel Hill, North Carolina against Maryland as announced Sunday night on the NCAA Division I selection show.
The Blue Devils take on the Terrapins in the opening round Friday, Nov. 15 at 1:30 p.m., at Karen Shelton Stadium. The other first-round game at the site features host and top-seeded North Carolina against the winner between Delaware and Fairfield. Both games will be aired on ESPN+.
Duke earns its 20th bid to the NCAA Tournament and second consecutive. Traveling to Chapel Hill for the seventh time, the Blue Devils are 4-6 when playing at North Carolina. Overall, Duke is 15-4 in first-round games and 7-8 in quarterfinal action.
The Blue Devils will meet Maryland for the sixth time in NCAA Championship history and for the second time this season. Duke edged the Terrapins, 1-0, at the annual ACC/B1G Cup. In NCAA postseason play, Duke is 2-3 against the Terps and last squared off against the former ACC foe in the 2017 quarterfinals. Friday's contest will mark the first time the two programs have played each other in the first round.

Frederique Wollaert in goal, the Blue Devils sport a 0.63 goals against average to rank second in the ACC and third nationally. Wollaert's 0.57 goals against average is third nationally and is the lowest in Duke single-season history.

Alaina McVeigh with 13 goals and two assists. All-ACC first-team midfielder
Charlie van Oirschot has four goals and five assists as eight different Blue Devils have at least two goals. All-ACC second-team memberÂ
Kira Curland has been instrumental on both ends of the field with two goals and four assists and as a key member of the defensive penalty corner unit.
Maryland joined Duke as one of the eight at-large selections after posting a 13-6 overall record and advancing to the Big Ten Championship semifinal. The Terrapins fell to eventual champion Michigan, 4-3, following a shootout.
The winner advances to the NCAA quarterfinal November 17 at 12 p.m., on ESPN+.
