DURHAM, N.C. – No. 10 Duke men's soccer (7-2-4) used five second-half goals on Tuesday evening against Queens (3-8-3) to secure their third consecutive clean sheet.
After a scoreless first half, Duke opened the second half in the 48th minute, as
Luke Thomas found space in the front of the box and rifled a shot on frame. The shot was saved by Matheus Rhormens, before deflecting off a Royal's defender and into the back of the net. In the 54th minute, Thomas doubled the Blue Devils lead with a screamer from 22 yards out into the top right corner, 2-0.
Minutes later,
Ulfur Bjornsson set a new single-season high for goals, tallying his 11th of the season. Graduate
Cameron Kerr scored his first career goal on Tuesday, hitting a shot bar down to increase the Duke lead to 4-0. With a minute left in the half,
Sol Arbib headed in the fifth goal of the night as Kerr served a ball from the near corner.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 16th minute, Ulfur Bjornsson registered the first quality chance of the match, rifling the shot on frame that was saved by Matheus Rhormens.
- With a scoreless match at halftime, Duke led the shot totals 8-0 with an advantage of 2-0 on goal.
- The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the 48th minute, as Luke Thomas found some space in the middle of the box before a saved shot ricocheted off a Queens defender, 1-0.
- In the 54th minute, Thomas doubled the Blue Devils lead, hitting a screamer from 22 yards out into the top right corner, 2-0.
- Later in the second half, Bjornsson tallied his 11th goal of the season, finishing a deflected shot inside the penalty area, 3-0.
- Late in the second half, Cameron Kerr registered his first career goal, hitting one bar down off a service from Jose Ortega and Nate Mulvaney, 4-0.
- With a minute left in the second half, Sol Arbib headed the fifth goal of the evening into the back of the net, after a perfect service from Kerr.
NOTES
- Sophomore Ulfur Bjornsson collected his 11th goal of the season, surpassing his previous career high of 10 goals on Tuesday. He finished the evening with three shots and two on frame.
- Graduate Wessel Speel recorded his third-straight clean sheet on Tuesday, registering one save in the Blue Devils 5-0 victory. The shutout was Speel's 30th career clean sheet.
- Graduate Cameron Kerr collected his first career goal on Tuesday, producing a career-high three points adding an assist in the 90th minute on Sol Arbib's goal.
- The Blue Devils improved to 7-2-4 overall and 3-1-2 at Koskinen Stadium.
- With five goals in the second half, Duke has now outscored its opponents 35-9 in the second half this season.
