DURHAM – Three Blue Devils earned Preseason All-America status from
D1Baseball on Monday, as junior right-handed pitcher
Fran Oschell III (1st), junior left-handed pitcher
Jonathan Santucci (2nd) and sophomore left-handed pitcher
James Tallon (3rd) all landed on separate teams.
Duke was one of three teams to land three players apiece across the three teams and is just one of two schools in the country to have three pitchers on the All-American's list. The ACC leads all conferences with 17 preseason All-Americans, followed by the SEC (14), Big 12 (nine), the Big West (three), and the Pac-12 and CAA (two apiece).
Oschell III, a 6-foot-7 right-handed pitcher, was a member of the 2023 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and was named an All-American by
Perfect Game (2nd team),
Baseball America (3rd team) and
D1Baseball (3rd team). The Phoenixville, Pa., native posted a perfect 6-0 record out of the bullpen for the Blue Devils in his 22 appearances. He finished the year with a 0.69 ERA, allowing just three earned runs to score. Oshell III concluded the 2023 campaign with 66 strikeouts and held opponents to a .133 average at the plate. He is one of 14 All-Americans from the 2023 postseason
D1Baseball teams that returned to school and made the 2024 preseason teams.
Santucci, a 6-foot-2 left-handed pitcher, started seven games for Duke before having his season cut short due to injury. The 2022 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Camp invitee posted a 2-2 record on the mound with a 4.30 ERA. He punched out a career-high 11 batters against Wake Forest (3/10) and allowed a season low two hits against North Carolina (3/24). In his first four starts of the year, Santucci tallied 38 strikeouts to just four walks.
Tallon, a 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher, became the seventh player in program history to be named to the All-ACC freshman team and was a consensus All-American. He broke the single season saves record with 12 in his 33 innings of work. The Arlington, Va., native held opponents to a .185 batting average against and struck out 54 batters during his rookie campaign. Tallon was named a Stopper of the Year finalist last season as a freshman.
