CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at North Carolina on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils (4-2-1, 1-2-0) and Tar Heels (4-0-3, 1-0-2) combined for 36 total fouls, 11 yellow cards and two red cards in a physical rivalry matchup.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- North Carolina opened the afternoon on the offensive, taking the first shot of the contest in the third minute and was flagged for offside in the 10th minute.
- Duke opened the scoring shortly after, as Forster Ajago forced a turnover in North Carolina's defensive third and slotted his left-footed shot in the back of the net in the 12th minute.
- The Tar Heels equalized in the 16th minute and took the lead in the 32nd minute.
- The first of the two red cards in the match was shown to Duke's bench in the 33rd minute.
- The physicality continued in the second half, with four fouls and a yellow card shown in the first three minutes after the break.
- Duke went a man up in the 66th minute after a second yellow was shown to a North Carolina player.
- The Blue Devils pushed forward, looking to find an equalizer. Duke attempted 10 shots in the final 25 minutes, including one that found the woodwork with 40 seconds remaining, but was unable to level the score.
NOTES
- Cameron Fisher made his Duke debut on Sunday afternoon, after missing the first six games due to injury.
- Duke out-shot North Carolina, 15-7, including an advantage in shots-on-goal, 5-3, over the full 90 minutes.
- Forster Ajago now has six goals in 2023, one shy of the most he has had in a single season (7, at Dayton).
