Duke Finishes First Day at Sahalee Players Championship

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Following the first two rounds at the Sahalee Players Championship, the Duke men's golf team is in eighth place at 13-over, 589, after rounds of 5-over and 8-over. The Blue Devils' low individual through 36 holes is Luke Sample, who sits at 2-over, 146, heading into Sunday's final round.

HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND ONE

As a team, Duke shot a 5-over, 293, in the first round.
Luke Sample led the Blue Devils through the first 18 holes of action, signing for a 1-under, 71. The junior bounced back from early bogeys on holes No. 1 and 5, but made the turn at even-par with birdies on the par-4 seventh and par-3 ninth. The junior carded two more birdies, on No. 11 and 14, while dropping a single shot on No. 12, to get under-par for the first time. Once in red figures, Sample closed out his under-par round with four consecutive pars.
Bryan Kim began his Duke career with back-to-back birdies before dropping shots on No. 5 and 6, making the turn at even-par. The freshman moved back into red numbers with a birdie on the par-5 11th and got to 2-under with a birdie on the par-3 13th. Two dropped shots over the final two holes wrapped up an even-par, 72, opening 18 holes of Kim's career.
Sophomore William Love bounced back from a 4-over front nine with an eagle on the par-5 11th and rolled in a birdie on No. 13 to help secure a 2-over, 74, opening round.
Ian Siebers got his scoring going with a birdie on No. 2, but scattered four bogeys through his next seven holes, making the turn at 2-over. The senior had a roller-coaster back nine, alternating birdies and bogeys on six of the final nine holes en route to a 4-over, 76.
Also for Duke, Kelly Chinn signed for a 7-over, 79. Daniel Choi, competing as an individual, shot a 5-over, 77, in the first round.

HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND TWO

The Blue Devils finished its first day of play with an 8-over, 293, in the second round.
Ian Siebers started fast in his second round, pouring in birdies on holes No. 2, 6 and 8, before a late bogey on No. 9 concluded his front nine at 2-under. Another bogey on No. 10 was erased with Siebers rolling in a birdie on the par-3 13th, his fourth birdie of the day. Two dropped shots to finish his day secured the senior an even-par, 72.
Another quick start, this time by William Love, came courtesy of birdies on No. 4 and 6. The Atlanta, Ga., native dropped five shots over the next four holes, but eventually righted the ship with a birdie on the par-5 11th. Love ended his afternoon on a high note, pouring in his second eagle of the day, this time on the par-5 18th, and signed for a 2-over, 74.
Bryan Kim played his second-round front nine at 1-under, bookending the first nine holes with birdies on No. 1 and 9. The Brookeville, Md., native shot a 4-over, 40, on the back nine, signing for a 3-over, 75, in the second round.
Five straight pars started Luke Sample's second round, before a birdie on No. 6 moved the junior under-par. The New York, N.Y., native spread five bogeys across his next 11 holes before demonstrating his recovery skills on the 18th, draining a birdie putt after initially finding the trees on his tee shot.
Also for the Duke, Kelly Chinn carded a 6-over, 78, and Daniel Choi shot an 8-over, 80, as an individual.

The third and final round of play at the Sahalee Players Championship begins at 11:55 a.m. ET for the Blue Devils, as they tee off of hole No. 10, playing alongside Washington and Southern California.
