Blue Devils Earn Top-Five Finish at Sahalee Players Championship

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Duke men's golf secured a top-five finish at the Sahalee Players Championship on Sunday, as the Blue Devils ended the three rounds at 16-over, 880, and in fifth place. Luke Sample paced Duke's lineup, as his even-par, 72, in the third round placed the junior into a tie for seventh at 2-over, 218.

HOW IT HAPPENED

As a team, Duke shot a 3-over, 291, in the third round.
Luke Sample, with his even-par, 72, carded his second round at even-par or better at the Sahalee Players Championship and finished in a tie for seventh place at 2-over, 218. The New York, N.Y., native got under-par with a birdie on his second hole of the day, No. 11, and rolled in additional birdies on holes No. 16 and 18 to help the junior make the turn at 1-under for the round. Another birdie on the par-5 second hole pushed Sample to 2-under. He bounced back from two dropped shots in the middle of his back nine with a birdie on the par-4 seventh before eventually closing out his round at even-par.
Kelly Chinn also signed for an even-par, 72, on Sunday and finished in a tie for 48th place at 13-over, 229. The junior bounced back from an early 3-over start, getting his first birdie of the day on the par-5 18th and adding additional birdies on holes No. 2 and 5. Chinn played his final 14 holes bogey-free, en route to his even-par final round.
Senior Ian Siebers played steady golf to start his day as he began with five straight pars, before draining a long birdie putt on the par-4 15th. Siebers moved back to 2-over shortly into his final nine holes, but bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 2nd. The Bremerton, Wash., native rolled in his third birdie of the day, this time on No. 7, en route to a 1-over, 73, for his final round. Siebers ended the event in a tie for 21st at 5-over, 221, for the event.
William Love ended the day at 2-over, 74, and in a tie for 27th overall at 6-over, 222. The sophomore rolled in five birdies amidst an up-and-down round but closed his round strong, with three birdies over his final eight holes as he worked his way to a 2-over, 74, for the third consecutive day.
Also for Duke, Bryan Kim carded a 6-over, 78 and finished in a tie for 34th at 9-over, 225, overall.
Daniel Choi concluded his play as an individual with a 9-over, 81, and ended in 66th place at 22-over, 238.

NOTES

On Sunday, as a team, Duke had the third-best round on the course with its 3-over, 291.
Illinois claimed the team title as the only school under-par, finishing at 1-under, 863.
Dating back to last season, Duke has finished inside the top-five in four of its last five team events.
All five golfers in Duke's lineup birdied the par-5 2nd hole on Sunday and the team played six different holes under-par in the final round.
William Love and Luke Sample had the most birdies on the course for the Blue Devils in the final round, with five each.
Sample earned a top-10 finish in the season's first tournament and now has eight top-10 finishes in his career.
