DURHAM – Former Duke men's soccer and men's lacrosse head coach
Roy Skinner passed away Tuesday, August 22. He was 90 years old.
Born March 16, 1933, Skinner joined the Duke Athletics department as an assistant coach with the Blue Devils' men's soccer program in 1959 and was elevated to head coach in 1966. In 11 seasons (1966-76), he guided Duke to a 71-45-5 record and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1972.
In 1967, Skinner joined Bruce Corrie on the sideline for the men's lacrosse team, serving as a co-head coach from 1967-70. He remained embedded in the men's lacrosse program for the next four-plus decades, working with head coaches Corrie, John Espey, Tony Cullen, Mike Pressler and
John Danowski.
Skinner also served as Duke's assistant wrestling coach from 1959-62.
Skinner was an accomplished student-athlete, excelling in both soccer and lacrosse at the University of Maryland, where he earned eight total varsity letters while leading the Terrapins to a combined seven conference championships.
An All-American in both sports, Skinner garnered second team recognition in soccer in 1957 and third team honors on the lacrosse field in 1958. His collegiate tenure was highlighted by the USILA national title in lacrosse in 1956.
Skinner, who graduated from Maryland in 1958, was inducted into the institution's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.
