DURHAM – The first edition of the 2023 Hermann Trophy Watch list was released Thursday, with Duke women's soccer senior goalkeeper
Leah Freeman one of 56 listed from the United Soccer Coaches.
Coming off an impressive three-year stint with Oregon, Freeman enters her first season with the Blue Devils. The native of Berkeley, Calif., has quietly garnered a number of preseason honors as the 2023 regular season kicks off Thursday against West Virginia in Durham at 7 p.m.
Freeman has been tabbed one of nine goalkeepers on the United Soccer Coaches players to watch list. She also was a TopDrawerSoccer Preseason Best XI First Team selection and the only goalkeeper listed on the first team. In the TopDrawerSoccer top-100 players for the preseason, Freeman was picked No. 10 overall and the top goalkeeper.
The reigning Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year and three-time All-Pac-12 selection, Freeman is coming off starting all 49 matches and totaling 18 shutouts over the last three seasons for the Ducks. In 2022, Freeman started 17 matches, had four shutouts and was listed as the No. 21 overall player in the 2022 class by TopDrawerSoccer. She led the Pac-12 in saves (114) and saves per game (6.71) as a junior, while leading all power conference goalkeepers in those categories as well.
A season ago, Duke's
Michelle Cooper was awarded the MAC Hermann Trophy, marking the first time a Blue Devil women's soccer player has claimed the heralded honor.
In the TopDrawerSoccer top-100 ledger, Duke sophomore forward
Kat Rader was also listed, coming in at No. 38 overall. Rader, who is from Stuart, Fla., tied a Blue Devil freshman record with 12 goals a season ago and led all freshmen nationally with 29 points.
