DURHAM – The Duke men's soccer team received two assists and a goal from Preseason All-ACC selection
Nick Pariano to help defeat UNC Wilmington, 4-0, in an exhibition match at Koskinen Stadium. The senior midfielder scored his second goal of the preseason, while setting up two other Duke goals for a total of four points on Wednesday night. Joining Pariano on the scoresheet were Duke newcomers
Ulfur Bjornsson and
Fahmi Ibrahim and an own goal by the Seahawks rounded out the scoring.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke opened its ledger early off an own goal by UNC Wilmington in the seventh minute. The play was set up by a lengthy attacking run by Ulfur Bjornsson into the opposing box, before a deflection by the Seahawks' defense sent the ball into the back of the net.
- Freshman goalkeeper Julian Eyestone made his first save of the match in the 26th minute, a full extension diving stop to deflect a shot wide of frame.
- A competitive first half finished with both teams having opportunities to add to the score, but it remained a 1-0 contest after the first 45 minutes of play.
- Bjornsson tallied his first goal in a Duke uniform shortly after the restart, volleying home a service from Nick Pariano in the 49th minute.
- Duke's third goal came off the foot of Fahmi Ibrahim in the 71st minute and was set up via a high-tempo combination from Jose Ortega and Pariano. Ibrahim, a graduate transfer from Cal, joined Bjornsson with his first goal in a Blue Devil uniform.
- Pariano continued to make his presence felt on the field, tallying his second goal of the preseason just a few minutes later. The senior midfielder collected a bouncing ball in the box and sent it into the net in the 74th minute for Duke's fourth goal of the night.
