DURHAM – For the eighth time out of the last nine years under the direction of head coach
Robbie Church, the Duke women's soccer team has been preseason ranked in the top-10 nationally as the United Soccer Coaches released its preseason top-25 ledger Tuesday with the Blue Devils No. 4 overall.
The No. 4 ranking marks the second consecutive preseason Duke has been a top-five team and the eighth time in school history.
UCLA received all eight first-place votes and was predicted No. 1, while North Carolina, Notre Dame, Duke, Virginia, Florida State, Alabama, Arkansas, TCU and Penn State were in the top-10. Rounding out the top-25 were Stanford, South Carolina, BYU, Pittsburgh, Texas, Georgetown, Michigan State, Northwestern, Santa Clara, Memphis, Saint Louis, Southern California, Harvard, Central Florida and Clemson.
A total of five ACC squads were listed in the top-10 and seven overall in the top-25.
Coming off three straight NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearances, Duke returns five starters --
Maggie Graham,
Katie Groff,
Olivia Migli,
Kat Rader and
Emily Royson -- and 15 letterwinners off its 15-5-3 squad from 2022.
A native of Stuart, Fla., Rader is coming off an impressive rookie season with 12 goals and five assists, while earning ACC Freshman of the Year accolades. Migli and Royson will anchor a backline that has registered 35 shutouts over the last three seasons, while Graham and Groff have combined for 79 starts in the midfield during their career. The Blue Devils also return six student-athletes that started at least one match a year ago –
Elle Piper,
Devin Lynch,
Grace Watkins,
Nicky Chico,
Carina Lageyre and
Baleigh Bruster.
Duke also welcomes the No. 6 overall recruiting class with eight freshmen and three transfers. In the final TopDrawerSoccer.com (TDS) class of 2023 rankings, the Blue Devils featured four players in the top-40 of the ledger –
Cameron Roller (5),
Mia Minestrella (13),
Kiera Clemens (26) and
Phoebe Goldthwaite (38). The reigning Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year,
Leah Freeman, from Oregon along with two-year starter
Kati Druzina (Notre Dame) and
Julia Saunicheva (UCLA) also transferred in.
The Blue Devils feature a pair of exhibition matches, starting Aug. 7 at home versus Wake Forest (7 p.m.) and on the road at South Carolina on Aug. 10 (5 p.m.), before opening the regular season at home versus West Virginia Thursday, Aug. 17 (7 p.m.).
