DURHAM - Duke rowing will welcome another standout recruiting class to the mix for the 2023-2024 campaign as head coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno announced the signing of incoming freshman
Isabel Barrios on Thursday.
Barrios joins the Blue Devils from Medford Mass., and graduated from Community Charter School of Cambridge. She wrapped up her high school rowing career with Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI) after competing in the 2023 USRowing Youth National Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla., in June. Barrios has excelled on the water and in the classroom, graduating as valedictorian of her senior class and vice president of National Honor Society. She also served as the student council treasurer and a chair member of the global leadership and activism club. Barrios was awarded the Brown University Book Award in 2021, which is presented to an outstanding junior who exhibits excellent verbal and written communication skills.

GoDuke.com: Why did you choose Duke?
Isabel Barrios: I chose Duke because of its excellent academics and active athletic environment. The warm weather all year long was also an added plus coming from New England.

GD: How did you get started in rowing?
IB: My school offered a learn to row program on the Charles River, so I decided to give it a try. I fell in love with being on the water, the discipline the training brought and the great team environment and decided to join CRI.

GD: What has been your favorite rowing memory?
IB: The February winter training trip in Orlando, Fla., where we got to watch the sunrise and sunset every day.

GD: What stuck out to you about the team in your decision-making process that made the decision feel right?
IB: The team environment seemed really friendly and welcoming.

GD: What impact do you plan to make in your first year?
IB: I hope to expand my network of people both on the rowing team and in the classroom with my positive attitude and curiosity.
