DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's lacrosse trio of
William Helm, Garrett Leadmon and
Wilson Stephenson have been named to the USILA Scholar All-America team as announced by the coaches' organization. The Blue Devils as a team finished the spring with a 3.584 team grade point average.
The three recently graduated with master's degrees with Helm and Leadmon earning their Master of Management Studies degree from Duke's Fuqua School of Business and Stephenson garnering a Master of Engineering degree with a focus in financial technology. They push Duke's number of USILA Scholar All-Americans to 50 since 1995 and 36 under head coach
John Danowski.
Helm, a graduate student transfer from St. Lawrence, started all 19 games in goal for the Blue Devils, finishing with a 10.97 goals against average and a .505 save percentage. He ranked second in the ACC and 19th nationally in goals against average. Helm made at double-digit saves in 11 games and stopped a season-high 19 in the Blue Devils' road win at Penn. He shined in both of Duke's wins against Virginia, making 14 on the road in Charlottesville and 12 in the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium. A native of Loudonville, N.Y., Helm garnered ACC Defensive Player of the Week recognition three times, following wins over North Carolina and Virginia. Helm shined on the big stage, making 14 saves in the NCAA Quarterfinal win over Michigan, sending Duke back to Championship Weekend.
Leadmon had a memorable final season as a Blue Devil, earning his first All-America accolades as a third-team pick by the USILA. The leader on Duke's first midfield line, Leadmon finished with 28 goals and nine assists for 37 points. He had at least one point in 15 games and registered hat tricks in wins over Loyola, North Carolina, Virginia and in the NCAA Semifinal against Penn State. Against the Nittany Lions, Leadmon had the overtime winner to send the Blue Devils in the title game. His 37 points were a career-high, besting his 12 during his rookie season. Leadmon returned to the first midfield line after playing short stick d-middie in 2022. Playing in 73 career games, Leadmon has 57 goals and 20 assists for 77 points.
Like Leadmon, Stephenson had a memorable final season for the Blue Devils, earning a USILA All-America honorable mention nod. A two-time team captain, he helped anchor Duke's close defense as the Blue Devils ranked second in the high-powered ACC with a 10.89 goals against average. He led the Blue Devils with 29 caused turnovers, ranking third in Duke single-season history.
Outstanding off the ground as well, Stephenson was second among non-faceoff specialists with 62 ground balls. He garnered the USA Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week award following his performance against Penn All-American Sam Handley. In the win over the Quakers, Stephenson picked up six ground balls, caused four turnovers and scored a goal, while holding Handley to just one goal and two assists. His efforts also earned him a spot on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List.
He finished his career with 64 games played, including 40 starting assignments, collected 136 ground balls and 60 caused turnovers. He ranks fifth in Duke history in career caused turnovers.
The Blue Devils captured the 2023 ACC title with a 5-1 overall record and finished the season at 16-3. Duke advanced to its seventh NCAA title game and 14th Championship Weekend before falling to Notre Dame, 13-9, in the NCAA Championship game.
