DURHAM β Seven members of the Duke field hockey team have been selected to compete in the 2023 Senior Nexus Championship (NXC), presented by Osaka Hockey, which will be held at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. from July 11 to 16.
Representing the Blue Devils at the six-day event will be incoming rookie Maggie Kondrath, sophomores Paige Bitting, Brynn Crouse and Macy Szukics, junior Josephine Palde, senior Barb Civitella and graduate student Hannah Miller.
Formerly known as the Young Women's National Championship, the Senior NXC is held annually and features 144 elite high school, collegiate and post-collegiate athletes.Β
Bitting, Crouse and Szukics all had strong rookie seasons for the Blue Devils with Bitting and Szukics playing in all 18 games. Bitting earned 15 starting nods on Duke's backline and Szukics contributed two goals and two assists. Crouse saw action in 13 games and finished the season with two goals.
Palde heads into her third season as a Blue Devil after a solid sophomore campaign that saw her score two goals and assist on six others. A starter in 17 of the 18 games last season, Palde will be looked to as a major contributor to Duke's attack this fall. Civitella, a leader onΒ Duke's outside midfield and attack,Β has played in 49 games as a Blue Devil and has six points.
Duke's undisputed leader, Miller recently was named to the U.S. Women's National Indoor Team for the upcoming FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup. The native of Malvern, Pa., currently ranks tied for 21st on the Duke career list for points (69) and 24th in goals (25). She is one point away from becoming the 21st player in Duke field hockey history to amass 70 career points.
The Senior Nexus Championship event will start with a team training session on Tuesday, July 11 with games starting on Wednesday, July 12. The opportunity to be selected for the 2023-24 U.S. Women's National Team and Junior USWNT Selection Camps are at stake.
