DURHAM – On the heels of another historic and successful outdoor season that featured an ACC Championship, 13 NCAA qualifiers, 33 top-five program marks set and four program records broken, Duke Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Shawn Wilbourn has been tabbed the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Region Women's Coach of the Year, as the organization unveiled the 2023 Regional Award winners for the 2023 NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field season Thursday afternoon.
"It's a great honor to be voted the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year by my peers," said Wilbourn. "Without an incredible staff, however, none of the accolades would be possible. It's a team effort and a tribute to them, as well as the support given to me from Duke University. Last but not least, our student-athletes are the best group of women to coach in the NCAA. They make my job so enjoyable and I love to go to work every single day!"
In his third year at the helm, Wilbourn guided the Duke women to its second overall, and first outright, ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship in three seasons. The Blue Devil women won the title going away as they totaled a resounding and ACC-record 145.5 points, breaking the previous record of 134 by Florida State in 2019. The 2023 campaign also saw Wilbourn lead the Blue Devils to their highest USTFCCCA ranking in program history, checking in at No. 4 in the Week 2 rankings.
Additionally, under his leadership, Wilbourn helped Duke qualify a school-record 16 athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the second straight season – 13 on the women's side across 10 events – where the Blue Devil women tallied two USTFCCCA All-America First Team honors (5,000m and 4x400m relay), four second-team accolades (400m, high jump, javelin and long jump) and four honorable mention honors (800m, 1500m, 3,000m steeplechase and javelin).
The honor pushes Wilbourn's USTFCCCA Southeast Region Award total to three for his career, as he was the recipient of the organization's Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons, earning recognition in 2015 and 2016.
