DURHAM – Duke softball freshman
D'Auna Jennings was named one of the top three finalists for the 2023 TUCCI/NFCA Freshman of the Year, the organization announced Thursday.
Jennings has been impressive on offense as a rookie, leading the team in batting average (.471) and stolen bases (21). The Houston, Texas, native, has rewritten the record books with program highs in batting average and hits (80), while ranking fourth and fifth nationally, respectively.
Jennings quickly earned her spot in the lineup, starting in centerfield in 56-of-58 games this year.
The freshman made her presence known in the NCAA Durham Regional last weekend, batting 7-for-9 (.778) with two stolen bases and accounting for three of Duke's 11 runs.
Jennings is joined by Stanford's NiJaree Canady and Taryn Kern of Indiana.
The TUCCI/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award was created in 2014 to honor outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes. To be eligible, student-athletes must be nominated by their member head coach and in their first year of NCAA Division I collegiate competition as a true freshman or redshirt freshman.
The winner, which is voted on by the Association's Division I All-America Committee, will be announced on Tuesday, May 30, prior to the start of the 2023 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
The eighth-seeded Blue Devils host ninth-seeded Stanford in the NCAA Super Regionals this weekend at Duke Softball Stadium. The best-of-three series begins Friday at noon and will be broadcast live on ESPN2 with Jenny Dalton-Hill and Pam Ward on the call.
