SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Duke women's golf team arrived in Arizona on Tuesday and over the last two days was able to get its first look at Grayhawk Golf Club in preparation for the NCAA Championship. Â
The Blue Devils are appearing in the NCAA Championship for the 33rd time under head coach
Dan Brooks and are competing for the 23rd time out of the last 26 years. Duke will be vying for its eighth NCAA crown, after taking home the title in 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2014 and 2019. Â
The championship gets started on Friday, May 19 with the Blue Devils teeing off at 9:10 a.m. (ET) off hole No. 10 along with Clemson and SMU. Â
"As usual we took the walkthrough day seriously, which made today more productive," said Brooks. "It almost feels like we've played it twice."
On Wednesday, the squad had their walkthrough at Grayhawk and had a very special visitor to come along with the Blue Devils. A 2001 Duke graduate, Kevin Streelman competed on the PGA Tour for 16 years and lives at Grayhawk Golf Club. His resume speaks for itself with two career PGA Tour wins, over $25 million in earnings, 50 top-10 finishes and 18 top-five finishes. Â
"We were fortunate enough to have Kevin Streelman out with us on Wednesday and kind of pick his brain," said senior
Erica Shepherd. "He lives on this golf course. So, just kind of seeing how he would play this golf course, someone who's had that much success, was super helpful. Just having that much knowledge before the practice round definitely helped us have a more efficient practice round and just felt like we'd already played it. Most of us have, but for those that haven't, that was very helpful. So, feeling good. We didn't have that much of a break between regionals and nationals, which is kind of nice. Just kind of keep it rolling."
As a Blue Devil, Streelman posted 20 rounds of under par golf and 10 top-20 finishes. As a senior in 2000-01, he carded a 73.4 stroke average, 14 sub-par rounds and claimed medalist honors at the Intercollegiate. He also finished tied for 15th at the 2001 ACC Tournament. Streelman also helped the Blue Devils to five tournament championships while lettering in 1998, 2000 and 2001.
"I thought the walkthrough was great," said Brooks. "Kevin Streelman, a Duke alum, walked most of the course with us and gave us some great input. He lives at Grayhawk."
The Blue Devils feature three golfers who competed in the 2021 NCAA Championship in which Duke placed second in stroke play and advanced to the semifinals of match play at Grayhawk Golf Club. Shepherd,
Phoebe Brinker and
Anne Chen were on the 2021 squad, while
Megan Furtney was able to walk the course as a substitute. Â
"Yeah, I have played this course a lot," said Shepherd. "I played it in the Thunderbird and AJGA golf. So since then, it's definitely changed a ton, but since two years ago, the only thing is that it's actually really wet. I got a few mud balls today, which is kind of funny being in Arizona, but I think that they got some unexpected rain and then I've been watering the heck out of it. So, it's definitely playing longer than it did a couple years ago. But by the end of the week, it'll be back to normal."
Along with Shepherd, Brinker, Chen and Furtney, freshman
Andie Smith will round out the 2023 lineup for the Blue Devils. Smith, a product of Hobe Sound, Fla., is coming off a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Regionals in her home state of Florida. Â
Duke has been trending in the right direction over the last three events as the Blue Devils won the Wolfpack Match Play Invitational and then placed second in the ACC Championship and the NCAA Palm Beach Gardens Regional. The Blue Devils have averaged a score of 288 in each of their last six stroke play rounds and features a 20-2-0 head-to-head record in those events. Â
The tournament will feature 54 holes of stroke play and then the top-15 teams will advance to Monday's final round of stroke play. Following 72 holes, the top-eight teams will advance to match play on Tuesday. The championship will take place on Wednesday. Â
"The team seems to be in great spirits and ready to get after it," said Brooks."
Golf Channel will be on site with coverage beginning on Monday from 5-9 p.m. (ET). Â
