RALEIGH, N.C. – Duke track and field opened ACC Outdoor Championship action with a strong showing on Thursday as the Blue Devils garnered three medals and eight All-ACC honors, headlined by a win in the men's pole vault by graduate student
Tyler Hrbek.
At the conclusion of day one's events, the Duke men sit in first with 31 points after five events while the women check in in sixth with 12 points through four scored events.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- For the second time in as many seasons, Duke locked down an ACC title in the men's pole vault – this year's win coming via graduate student Tyler Hrbek.
- After passing on the first two heights Hrbek took on the bar set at 5.03m, clearing it on his second attempt. The Northvale, N.J., product passed on the following height before taking on the next two, clearing them on his first and second attempts, respectively.
- Hrbek's final clearance of 5.33m (17-5.75 feet) slotted himself atop the competition field and earned graduate student All-ACC First Team honors, improving his No. 3 all-time program mark in the process.
- The Blue Devils earned a pair of bronze medals in the men's javelin and women's long jump behind strong performances from Scott Campbell and Isabel Wakefield.
- Campbell opened the Thursday slate of field events for Duke and set the tone for the day as he posted the first podium finish of the weekend for the Blue Devils.
- The sophomore opened the competition with a bang, launching the javelin 69.61m (228-4 feet) on his first throw. The distance was good for third among the field and earned Campbell a nod to the all-conference first team.
- Over in the women's long jump, Wakefield collected a third-place finish via a huge jump on her fifth attempt. The graduate student flew out to 6.26m (20-6.50 feet) on her second-to-last jump, earning herself first team All-ACC status.
- Duke also garnered All-ACC Second Team honors in the men's javelin, women's hammer, men's long jump and men's 10,000m.
- Graduate student Ezra Mellinger turned in a personal-best showing in the men's long jump while making a revision to the program record books in the process.
- Mellinger delivered his best leap on his initial attempt, jumping 7.51m (24-7.75 feet) to place fifth and move into a tie for fourth all-time at Duke.
- The women's hammer throw saw junior Moorea Mitchell place sixth and lock down the first all-conference honor of her career.
- Mitchell made her last throw her best, putting it all together for a final toss measuring 58.90m (193-3 feet).
- Senior Luke Jackson and graduate student Joe DiDario notched All-ACC Second Team honors after the duo finished in fourth and sixth place, respectively, in the men's javelin.
- Jackson posted a throw of 65.85m (216 feet) on his first attempt while DiDario came through on his fifth toss measuring 64.82m (212-8 feet).
- Senior Zach Kinne closed out the evening in the men's 10,000m and turned in a time of 30:30.52, good for a sixth-place finish along with a nod to the second team.
- Classmate Halle Bieber and sophomores Abby Geiser and Megan McGinnis punched their tickets to the 200m final after each delivered strong showings in the preliminary round.
- Bieber and McGinnis earned automatic qualifiers after posting the top times in their individual heats – clocking 23.24 seconds and 23.25 seconds, respectively. Geiser dashed in 23.55 seconds to lock down her spot.
- Geiser and McGinnis' times were personal bests, with McGinnis moving into No. 4 all-time in program lore.
- Graduate student Arianna Gragg advanced to Saturday's women's 400m hurdles final after logging a personal best and the third-fastest time in program history of 57.87 seconds.
- Classmate Nick Dahl and sophomore Amina Maatoug both notched automatic qualifiers to the men's and women's 1500m final via their times of 3:40.87 and 4:19.55.
- With the first day of multis complete, sophomore Max Forte and junior Brianna Smith currently sit in second place in the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon, respectively.
- Forte has amassed 3,946 points through five events while Smith owns 3,431 points following four events.
