WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Duke track and field turned in a stellar day of competition on Friday at Kentner Stadium as the Blue Devils concluded the Wake Forest Invitational with six top-five program marks along with seven event wins.
TOP PERFORMANCES
Graduate student Isabel Wakefield delivered the best performance of her career en route to being crowned champion of the women's long jump.
Wakefield's third jump was her best of the competition, flying out to a personal best of 6.39m (20-11.75 feet) – just two centimeters off the school record – while leapfrogging three spots up to No. 2 all-time.
Taking part in the men's hammer throw, graduate student Myles Schreck turned in his best showing of the season and collected a third-place finish.
Schreck's sixth and final attempt was his best of the competition as he came through with a throw of 60.23m (197-7 feet), improving his No. 2 all-time program mark in the process.
The women's high jump saw junior Brianna Smith pick up her first event win of the season behind a personal-best performance.
Smith cleared a height of 1.79m (5-10.50 feet) to collect the win, moving herself into a tie for third all-time in program lore.
Graduate student Emily Sloan picked up an event win for the Blue Devils in the women's 100m hurdles and slotted herself No. 4 all-time in the program record books after clocking a season-best time of 13.38 seconds.
Duke's last two top-five program marks on the day came via graduate student Nick Dahl and freshman Lauren Tolbert in the men's and women's 800m Invite, both athletes' times checking in at fifth all-time at Duke.
Dahl placed third and improved his fifth-fastest time in program history behind a time of 1:48.10, while Tolbert registered the victory in the women's race and earned her fourth top-five program mark of the outdoor season as she turned in a run of 2:04.87.
The Blue Devils collected three more wins on the day – each of them coming via field events.
Dana Baker kickstarted Duke's Friday slate in the women's javelin and set the tone for the day with a first-place finish. The senior delivered her clutchest throw on her third attempt, launching the javelin 49.89m (163-8 feet) to slot herself atop the field.
Robbie Otal kept his stellar season in the men's discus going as the graduate student picked up his fifth win of the season. Otal made his third try the charm and turned in a throw of 59.62m (195-7 feet) to earn the victory by more than two meters.
Classmate Tyler Hrbek tallied his fourth top-five placement and second title of the outdoor campaign in the men's pole vault after leaping 4.90m (16-0.75 feet).
