DURHAM – Duke graduate student defenseman
Wilson Stephenson is one of nine additions to the 2023 Tewaaraton Award Men's Watch List as announced by the organization Thursday afternoon. Stephenson joins teammates
Brennan O'Neill and
Kenny Brower on the list which includes the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlights the early contenders for this year's Tewaaraton Award.
Stephenson is having a stellar final season for the fourth-ranked Blue Devils, helping anchor Duke's defensive efforts. Playing both close defense and out top as a longstick midfielder, the Greenwich, Conn., native leads all Blue Devils with nine caused turnovers in six outings. He ranks second among non-faceoff specialists on the team in ground balls (16).
Stephenson, a two-year team captain, recently turned in the best performance of his career in Duke's 14-12 win at Penn. Drawing the assignment of defending All-American midfielder Sam Handley, Stephenson finished the afternoon with six ground balls, four caused turnovers and his first career goal, while holding Handley to one goal and two assists.
The outstanding effort at Penn earned Stephenson a sweep of the weekly honors as he picked up USA Lacrosse Magazine Division I Player of the Week honors as well as ACC Defensive Player of the Week and USILA Team of the Week recognition.
Stephenson has played in 51 games and started 28 of them. He has collected 90 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers during his time in Durham.
"We've seen an exciting, action-packed start to the 2023 season. These players have distinguished themselves and earned their way onto our 2023 Watch Lists," said Andy Phillips, President of the Tewaaraton Foundation. "The Tewaaraton Foundation would like to congratulate these players on their outstanding play thus far, and we wish them and their teams the best of luck for the rest of this season."
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are comprised of premier college coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
Duke (5-1, 1-0) moved up one spot to fourth in the USILA Coaches poll following the win at Syracuse. The Blue Devils return to Koskinen for a three-game homestand, welcoming No. 7 Loyola March 10 at 7 p.m., and 18th-ranked North Carolina March 17 at 6 p.m. Air Force wraps up the March home slate, March 20 at 7 p.m.
