Pam Bustin on Sophia
"Sophia is an incredibly versatile hockey player. She is strong and quick and can command an attacking circle; yet she is also a calculating defender who can control the play
without the ball. Sophia represents her club New Heights where she has developed the important fundamental skills and knowledge of playing various positions. Her competitive nature matched with her athleticism and solid skill set, make her a force in which to be reckoned. Sophia's love for competition and her desire to constantly improve will immediately help create a productive training vibe each day. We are excited to officially welcome Sophia to Duke!"
Hailing from Far Hills, N.J., Miller has had a decorated scholastic career. She played for Kerrie Burns at Kent Place School, lettering all four seasons and plays her club hockey with New Heights Field Hockey Club.
Miller, after notching three goals her freshman campaign at Kent, garnered the team's Most Valuable Player award each of the next three seasons. She amassed an incredible 86 goals and 28 assists for 200 points in those three seasons to finish her career at Kent with 206 points.
Not only a standout on her team, Miller is a three-time first-team all-county, all-district and non-public all-state selection. She was voted third-team all-state her junior and senior years as well as to the Max Field Hockey Top 100 list. Max Field Hockey also tabbed her to its New Jersey All-Region squad this past season.
Miller has helped the New Heights Field Hockey Club to a host of flight championships over her time with the team. The squad most recently took second at the 2023 Disney tournament and was the flight champion at the 2021 NIT, festival and NCC tournaments.
She also has been a part of USA Field Hockey, earning invites to the Rise National Team Selection Camp in 2021-22 and playing in the 2021 U-19 Nexus Championship among a host of other events over the course of her high school career.
When Miller wasn't playing hockey for Kent, she picked up another kind of stick as a member of the golf team. She lettered all four seasons and finished in the top-15 in the state tournament as a junior. Miller also ran track at Kent.
Outside of the athletics arena, the 5-11 midfielder is the head of percussion in the school orchestra and the Vice President of Film Club. She is a member of the National Spanish Honors Society, National Science Honors Society and National Math Honors Society.
