DURHAM – Duke junior faceoff specialist
Jake Naso won 68 percent of his faceoffs last week to earn a spot on the USILA Team of the Week for the week ending March 26. This is Naso's first appearance on the weekly list from the USILA.
Naso turned in a pair of outstanding performances at the faceoff dot last week to lead the Blue Devils two victories. The native of Holtsville, N.Y., opened the week by winning 13-of-17 faceoffs and picking up 10 ground balls in an 18-6 win over Air Force.
Five days later, Naso turned in arguably his best performance of the year against the nation's leading faceoff specialist. He won 15-of-24 restarts, collected three ground balls and scored a goal in the 12-9 win versus Saint Joseph's.
Naso's 63 percent against Saint Joseph's Zach Cole marked just the fourth time the Hawk specialist failed to win at least 50 percent of his draws in a game. Cole entered the weekend with a nation-leading .696 win percentage at the dot.
Sporting a .653 win percentage for the year, Naso leads all ACC specialists and ranks second nationally. His 8.70 ground balls per game are the most in the conference and eighth nationally.
One of two Blue Devils to own at least 600 faceoff wins, Naso has 632 wins and is on pace to become just the 30th player in NCAA history to amass 700 victories. He is 184 faceoff victories away from tying the Duke record of 816 held by Brendan Fowler.
The fourth-ranked Blue Devils travel to take on No. 1 Virginia Friday, March 31 at Klöckner Stadium. Faceoff is set for 5 p.m., on ESPNU.
