DURHAM – Duke graduate student goaltender
William Helm has been named the ACC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week and the PNC Achievers Duke Student-Athlete of the Week following his performance in the Blue Devils' win over North Carolina. These are first weekly honors for the first-year Blue Devil.
Helm made 14 saves, including five in the fourth quarter, to help fourth-ranked Duke to a commanding 15-8 victory over No. 14 North Carolina. Making his eighth start of the year, Helm and the Blue Devils held the Tar Heels without a goal for the first 9:50.
After getting on the board late in the first quarter, North Carolina didn't score again until 4:37 left in the second period – a span of 15:33. Helm made three saves in that stretch as Duke built an 8-1 lead.
The Tar Heels, trailing 9-2, came roaring back in the final minutes of the second quarter and early in the third to make it a one-goal game at 9-8. Helm and the Duke defense stepped up to put the clamps on the Tar Heels, holding them without a goal for the final 26:37. Helm made eight saves in that stretch, five of which came in the fourth quarter allowing Duke to pull away for the seven-goal victory.
Helm, a graduate student transfer from St. Lawrence University, is averaging 10.89 saves per game and sports a 9.80 goals against average and a .547 save percentage in his nine starts this season.
