How it Happened
- The first quarter was a relatively even affair with Duke holding a 14-13 edge in shots and 6-3 lead after 15 minutes. The Blue Devils jumped ahead 4-1 before the Panthers rallied to make it 4-3 with consecutive goals from Michael Ippolito. He led all High Point scorers with three goals.
- Williams notched the final two goals of the period, including one with two seconds remaining, to spark the 11-0 run that put the game out of reach for the Panthers.
- The second stanza was all Blue Devils as they scored eight unanswered, fired 18 shots, won all nine faceoffs and held the Panthers without a goal. It wasn't just one or two people propelling the Blue Devil offense in the second quarter. Sophomore Andrew McAdorey started the scoring 2:32 into the period, then Williams, Jake Naso, Brennan O'Neill and Aidan Danenza got into the mix to make it 11-3.
- Starting with Danenza's score at the 3:38 mark, Duke tallied four goals in a span of 2:33 for the 14-3 halftime advantage. McAdorey finished the night with four goals and two assists, while O'Neill had two goals and two helpers. The attack trio of McAdorey, O'Neill and Williams accounted for 13 goals and four assists.
- Defensively, the Blue Devils were equally as impressive. Wilson Stephenson drew the matchup with preseason All-Atlantic Sun choice Brayden Mayea and held him to just one assist. Duke forced 19 turnovers and perhaps most impressively held the Panthers scoreless on five extra-man opportunities.
- Naso went 13-of-23 at the faceoff dot, picking up six ground balls. He also added a career-high two goals and an assist. In goal, William Helm was excellent once again, matching his career high with 16 saves and just six goals allowed. Andrew Bonafede made two stops and Evan Barr recorded his first career save as a Blue Devil.
- Junior defenseman Cole Krauss was buys off the ground with five ground balls, while Kenny Brower had two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Notes
- Williams became the 23rd player in program history to record 100 career goals. He and O'Neill both have 102 career goals to sit in a tie for 21st in the Duke records book. O'Neill's four points tonight moves him to 140 for his career, while Williams is at 118.
- Duke's 39 goals in two games to start the season are the most since 1999 when the Blue Devils scored 20 and 21 in the first two respective games of the year.
- Duke's attack trio - McAdorey, O'Neill and Williams – each have 11 points apiece and has accounted for 56 percent of the Blue Devils' scoring. Eleven different players overall have a goal this season and nine have at least two.
- In two starts, Helm has made 24 saves and allowed only 10 goals for a 6.22 goals against average and a .706 save percentage.
- Duke has yet to give up a man-up goal, killing off all eight man-down situations this season.
Quotes
Dyson Williams on scoring his 100th career goal and team's depth
"Obviously there have been a lot of great players in this program so it's cool to be a part of that, but I'm more worried that the boys get the win. Fortunately tonight went our way and we're now 2-0 and we can look forward to the next game Saturday."
"I think we have an incredible amount of depth on the team and that's showing on the field. We had a great fall building [that] and as we start the spring continuing to build that chemistry. So far, so good."
Coach Danowski on what went well in the 11-0 run
"I thought the play of
Jake Naso and the faceoff game [was really important]. You have to give High Point a lot of credit. I thought the first quarter they had tremendous wing play. Their faceoff guy was doing a nice job of beating the whistle and so they really out-scrapped us. Second quarter though, Jake [and we] won all nine faceoffs or gained possession nine times in various ways. I thought that was a big part of it. We just had a lot more possessions. I thought Jake's play certainly helped give us some momentum."
