DURHAM – Duke graduate student defenseman
Wilson Stephenson has been named the USA Lacrosse Magazine Division I National Player of the Week for his effort in the Blue Devils' win at No. 8 Penn last weekend. This is the first weekly award in Stephenson's career.
Stephenson turned in arguably the best performance of his career this past Saturday in helping Duke to a 14-12 victory over No. 8 Penn. Drawing the matchup with one of the nation's top midfielders in Sam Handley, the Greenwich, Conn., native recorded a career-high four turnovers, collected a career-best six ground balls and added his first career goal in the triumph.
Stepping out from his normal close defense position, Stephenson put the clamps on Handley, holding the preseason player of the year candidate to one goal and two assists and forcing him into three turnovers. Handley entered the game averaging 4.2 points per game for his career.
Stephenson is tied for the team lead in ground balls for a non-faceoff specialist this season with 15, while his eight caused turnovers lead the squad. The two-year team captain has at least two ground balls in every game this season and has recorded a caused turnover in three of the five.
Duke vaulted to No. 5 in the USILA Coaches' Poll following the top-10 victory over the weekend. The Blue Devils travel to open ACC play at No. 20 Syracuse, March 5. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m., on ACCNX.
