CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Duke fencing team kicked off the 2023 ACC Fencing Championship on a high note Saturday as four Blue Devils collected individual medals at the event which was held on the campus of Boston College.Â
Three Blue Devils — Chloe Beittel (epee), Christina Ferrari (foil) and Terence Lee (saber) — brought home silver in their respective weapons, while Finn Hossfeld (foil) secured bronze.Â
In women's epee, Beittel totaled eight wins in pool play and advanced to the semifinal/final bracket as the No. 4 seed. She defeated top-seeded Miriam Grady (Notre Dame), 15-11, in the semis before falling to Notre Dame's Kaylin Hsieh, 15-5, to bring home silver and All-ACC honors.
Ferrari collected 10 victories during foil pool play to earn the No. 2 seed in the semifinal/final bracket. Ferrari faced Karina Yaroshenko of Notre Dame in the semifinals, cruising to a 15-5 victory, before ultimately falling to eventual gold medalist Nicole Pustilnik (Notre Dame), 15-13, to earn silver and All-ACC accolades.
Lee entered the semifinal/final bracket as the No.1 overall seed in men's saber after tallying 12 victories and just three losses during pool play. He captured a 15-10 victory over North Carolina's Elden Wood as he strung together a 13-3 run to pull off the comeback. In the final, Lee fell to No. 2 Luke Linder (Notre Dame), 15-5, to secure a silver medal and All-ACC status.Â
Hossfeld finished in third to claim a bronze medal in men's foil with 10 wins in pool play. He earned the No. 3 seed in the semifinal but fell to Boston College's Brian Wang, 15-12, in the bout. He secured third place with a 15-12 win over No. 4 Paulo Morais of Notre Dame.Â
The top two finishers at each weapon comprise the 2023 All-ACC fencing team.
The team competition will be held Sunday, with the women kicking off at 8 a.m. and the men opening at 12:15 p.m. Both events will be broadcast on ACCNX.
