DURHAM - Graduate student Maddie Jenner broke the NCAA Division I all-time draw control record as the 11th-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team cruised to a 24-1 victory over Gardner-Webb Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
With her 18 draw controls today, she now owns 646 for her career, surpassing Jessica Karwacki's 645 (Robert Morris, 2013-16). She added a goal and an assist to round out her day.
Offensively, the Blue Devils were led by junior Katie DeSimone with eight points from five goals and three assists, while Maddie McCorkle added a career-high four goals in the outing. Ainsley Thurston also tallied a career-high three goals as 16 different Blue Devils had a hand in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke opened its high-scoring affair 18 seconds into the contest as DeSimone found the back of the cage first. Gardner-Webb secured the equalizer 59 seconds later, its only point of the contest.
- The Blue Devils held a dominant 9-1 lead after the first quarter as seven different Blue Devils found the back of the cage.
- Duke tacked on nine more goals to make it 18-1 at the half, led by DeSimone with four tallies.
- Izzy Marsh connected with Carly Bernstein to open the second-half scoring (19-1) before she tallied a goal of her own in the fourth quarter just before time expired. Mattie Shearer connected on her first career goal in the fourth quarter while Jane DiGregorio also found the back of the cage to round out Duke's scoring.
