Duke Drops Senior Night Decision to Gardner-Webb

RESULTS

DURHAM – Duke wrestling fell 30-10 on senior night Wednesday to Gardner-Webb inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Blue Devils' 10 points all came from seniors, including a major decision win by No. 18 Jonah Niesenbaum.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 17-0 edge before the Blue Devils were able to record their first points of the match.
Senior Patrick Rowland was in full control of the 149-pound battle, defeating Parker Corwin by a 10-3 decision. Rowland led the match 4-1 heading into the final period before adding two additional takedowns and riding time in the third for his final score.
In the 157-pound bout between sophomore Logan Ferrero and Tyler Brignola was a tight one from the start. The two were knotted at 2-2 late in the third frame before Brignola recorded a takedown and riding time to ultimately secure the 5-2 win and extend GWU's lead to 20-3.
Freshman Nick Tattini tried to register points for Duke when he and Andrew Wilson dueled at 174. Unfortunately, Wilson was able to hold on for the 7-4 decision in the third frame.
Despite trailing, 30-3, with two matches remaining, the Blue Devils would not give up, as seniors Vincent Baker and Niesenbaum closed out the match on a high note.
Baker and Sam Mora went scoreless in the opening frame of the 184 match, before Baker tallied the first point off an escape in the second. With it still a close 1-0 contest in the third, Baker was able to fend off any last-ditch efforts by Mora to record the 6-2 decision win.
In the heavyweight bout, Niesenbaum started scoring early and never really looked back. In total, he posted eight takedowns to register the 19-6 major decision.

NOTES

Prior to the match, the Blue Devils acknowledged seven seniors in Baker, Gabe Dinette, Drake Doolittle, Bryson Neace, Niesenbaum, Brayden Ray, and Rowland.
Rowland and Baker tallied their 12th and sixth victories of the year, respectively.
Niesenbaum shifts his season ledger to 23-3 and has recorded seven major decision wins.

UP NEXT
The Blue Devils close out their regular season on Saturday when they travel to No. 16 Pittsburgh for a noon matchup on ACC Network Extra.
