Men's Lacrosse Announces 2024 Captains

DURHAM – Duke University men's lacrosse coach John Danowski has announced that graduate students Kenny Brower, Tyler Carpenter and Dyson Williams along with seniors Aidan Danenza, Jake Naso and Brennan O'Neill will serve as captains for the 2024 season.
Brower is in his third season as a captain, while Carpenter and Williams return as second-year captains. The trio of Danenza, Naso and O'Neill garnered the nod for the first time. Brower is the first player in program history to be voted a team captain in three seasons.
A 2023 USILA All-America first team selection, Brower is the anchor to Duke's close defense. He finished second on the team last season in caused turnovers (22) and third among non-faceoff specialists in ground balls (39). In the six ACC outings in 2023, Brower collected 11 ground balls and two caused turnovers while holding opponents under their scoring average in three of the six games to earn his second All-ACC award. A starter in every game of his career, Brower ranks ninth in Duke history with 54 career caused turnovers and is three away from climbing into the top five on the Duke career chart.
A top longstick midfielder, Carpenter has been a key part of Duke's success on defense and on the faceoff throughout his career. He led all non-faceoff specialists in ground balls (66) and had 16 caused turnovers a year ago, earning USILA All-America third team recognition. He has played in 61 career games and has amassed 65 caused turnovers to rank fourth on the Duke career list. Carpenter also has an impressive 228 ground balls in his four seasons in Durham.
Williams earned his first All-America award after leading Blue Devil goal scorers with 60 goals to rank seventh on the Duke single-season charts. The Oshawa, Ontario native earned his first All-ACC accolade last year after averaging 3.40 goals per game in ACC play and notching four hat tricks in the six outings. One of 10 Blue Devils to record at least 50 goals in a season, the senior captain has 151 goals and 21 assists for 172 points. He is on pace to become the 16th Blue Devil to amass 200 points in his career and the third to score 200 career goals.
Running on the first midfield for the past two seasons, Danenza returns as Duke's most experienced midfielder. The Muttontown, N.Y., native has been a steady contributor for the Blue Devils, with 35 goals and 28 assists for 63 points. He had his most productive season in 2023 with 22 goals and 10 helpers for a career-best 32 points.
Duke's faceoff specialist, Naso garnered first-team All-American honors last season after leading the ACC in faceoff percentage (.620), winning 315-of-508 restarts. The 315 victories at the dot are tied for fifth all-time in NCAA Division I single-season history. He also picked up 164 ground balls, ranking 23rd in NCAA history. He recently moved to 21st on the NCAA career charts with 751 faceoff victories. Dangerous off the draw on offense, he contributed five goals and three assists in 2023. A winner of 783 faceoffs in his career, Naso currently ranks 16th on the NCAA career chart and is 34 away from surpassing the Duke record of 816 held by Brendan Fowler. He is 23rd on the NCAA career list in ground balls (432) and 43 away from surpassing Fowler for the top Duke mark.
The winner of the 2023 Tewaaraton Award and the Raymond J. Enners Most Outstanding Player, O'Neill is widely considered the top returning player in college lacrosse this season. He led all Division I players with 97 points from 55 goals and 42 assists. He was the lone Division I player to rank in the top 20 in goals (2.89), assists (2.21) and points (5.11) per game this season.
The 2023 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, O'Neill made a big splash on the international stage this past summer as he helped lead the United States to the gold medal at the World Lacrosse Championship. He was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player following his stellar five-goal performance in the gold medal game. The fastest player in Duke history to score 100 goals, O'Neill has played in 52 career games and owns 153 goals and 73 assists for 226 career points. He ranks eighth in career goals, ninth in career points and 16th in career assists. He is on pace to become the sixth player in Duke history to rank in the top 10 in career goals, assists and points.
The Blue Devils open the 2024 season Feb. 3 against Bellarmine at Koskinen Stadium. The complete 2024 schedule will be released later this month or early January.
