Duke Earns No. 3 Seed; Will Face American in Opening Round

DURHAM – The Duke field hockey team earned the No. 3 overall seed in the 2023 NCAA Field Hockey Championship and will host the first and second rounds as announced Sunday night on the Division I selection show.
The Blue Devils will host Patriot League Champion American University in the opening round Friday, Nov. 10 at 12 p.m. The other first-round game features Liberty (17-2) and Syracuse (10-7) at 2:30 p.m. The winners of the two games meet in the quarterfinal Nov. 12 at 1 p.m., on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Duke earns its 19th bid to the NCAA Tournament and first since 2019. The Blue Devils last hosted first and second-round contests as the No. 3 seed in 2018. Duke is 24-18 all-time in NCAA Tournament action and has advanced to the final weekend six times.
Hosting for the seventh time overall, the Blue Devils are 9-3 when playing at home. Duke is 14-4 in opening games and 6-8 in quarterfinal action. The Blue Devils face American for the third time and are 2-0 all-time against the Eagles with wins in 2003 (3-1) and 2016 (3-0).
Duke enters NCAA postseason play with a 16-4 overall record and sporting one of the nation's best defenses. ACC Goalkeeper of the Year, Piper Hampsch anchors the defensive effort with a 0.97 goals against average – the fifth best in Duke single-season history. Helping the nation's third-ranked defense in the center of the backline is All-ACC second team honoree Mary Harkins.
Offensively, the Blue Devils are led by ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Year Alaina McVeigh and All-ACC first-team choice Hannah Miller with 35 and 23 points, respectively. Charlie van Oirschot has 14 points from five goals and four assists, while All-ACC second-team member Kira Curland has five goals and two assists.
