NOTRE DAME, Ind. – No. 14 Duke fell behind early at No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday night and could not find an equalizing goal, dropping the ACC matchup, 1-0, at Alumni Soccer Stadium. The Blue Devils (6-3-1, 2-3-0) out-shot the Fighting Irish (7-1-3, 4-0-1), including a late flurry in the second half, but were held scoreless by multiple diving saves and near-misses.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke applied early pressure, with Forster Ajago finding a scoring opportunity in the third minute, but his shot missed high, going out over the crossbar.
- Notre Dame opened the scoring in the 13th minute, with a volley from distance finding the back of the net.
- Ulfur Bjornsson nearly equalized less than two minutes later, but his low-driven shot was saved by the sprawling Fighting Irish goalkeeper.
- Notre Dame had a scoring chance materialize in the closing minutes of the first half after a Duke turnover in front of goal, but Julian Eyestone proved up to the challenge, making a diving save.
- The Fighting Irish started the second half on the front foot, earning an early corner kick and also forcing a save by Eyestone off a free kick.
- Bjornsson found himself with another scoring opportunity, this time in the 66th minute, but again, a diving stop prevented the Blue Devils from leveling the score.
- Kamran Acito and Ajago both had a chance to net the equalizing goal in the 85th minute, but Acito's header was saved and Ajago just missed the frame with his effort on the rebound.
- Duke finished the night with a 13-9 advantage in shots, but could not find a game-tying goal.
NOTES
- Duke was held scoreless for the first time in nearly a month, when the Blue Devils were defeated, 2-0, at Clemson on Sept. 15.
- The Blue Devils earned four corners on Saturday night, while only conceding one.
- Duke took twice as many shots as Notre Dame following the halftime break, 8-4.
- Julian Eyestone finished the night with three saves.
- Ulfur Bjornsson and Kamran Acito led the Blue Devils in total shots, with three apiece.
