CARMEL, Calif. – The Duke men's golf team completed nine holes in its second round before play was halted due to darkness Monday at the Cal Poly Invitational, held at The Preserve Golf Club. Second-round action is set to resume at 12:30 p.m. ET, on Tuesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED: DAY ONE
- As a team, Duke shot 2-under, 286, in the first round.
- Freshman Bryan Kim, starting on hole No. 9, began his day with a bogey, but was soon in red figures after birdies on the par-5 13th and par-4 15th. Kim made double-bogey on No. 17 to stand at 1-over through his first nine hole. The Brookeville, Md., native played bogey-free in the back half of his round and poured in birdies on holes No. 2, 4 and 8 to close his first round strong and card a 2-under, 70. Kim is currently 2-over through nine holes in his second round and will resume play on the 18th.
- Luke Sample began his day on No. 8, a 527-yard par-5, and made birdie to quickly get under-par. The junior then rolled in an eagle on the par-5 13th to reach 3-under through his first six holes. Sample made 10 pars over the final 12 holes, but dropped shots on No. 16 and No. 2 to finish off his opening round at 1-under, 71. Through nine holes in the second round, Sample is even-par and will resume play on the 17th hole.
- Kelly Chinn battled back from a slow start to finish at even-par, 72, in the first round. Starting on hole No. 10, Chinn quickly found himself 3-over through two holes. A birdie on the par-5 13th pushed Chinn back to 2-over, but three additional dropped shots over the next two holes sent Chinn to 5-over on the day. The junior switched the momentum with back-to-back birdies on holes No. 17 and 18 and made the turn at 3-over. He continued to roll in birdies on the front nine, carding four over the next eight holes to reach 1-under, before a dropped shot on the last finished off an up-and-down opening round, even-par, 72. Chinn is currently even-par in the second round and will resume play on No. 1
- Daniel Choi also bounced back from a slow start, after finding himself 3-over walking off the 15th green, his sixth hole of the day. Four birdies across the final 12 holes helped offset two additional bogeys, as Choi signed for a 1-over, 73, for the first round. At the suspension of play, Choi was even-par and is set to start on the first hole when play resumes.
- Also for Duke, Ian Siebers signed for a 3-over, 75, in the first round. He's currently 2-over in the second round and will resume play on the 18th hole.
HOW IT HAPPENED: BRYAN NATIONAL COLLEGIATE
- In Greensboro, N.C., Duke's individuals wrapped up play at the Bryan National Collegiate, held on the Bryan Park Champions Course.
- Ethan Evans led the efforts for the Blue Devils, finishing in a tie for fourth place at 6-under, 210. The sophomore's third round reached as low as 4-under, following a bogey-free first nine holes, and Evans added a fifth birdie to his round on the par-3 seventh hole to help offset back-to-back bogeys on holes No. 4 and 5. One additional bogey, on No. 8, closed Evans' 2-under, 70, in the final round. With his under-par effort in the third round, Evans finished in red numbers in all three rounds for the tournament.
- John Peters finished in a tie for 38th at 7-over, 223, following a final-round 2-over, 74. Daniel Uranga tied for 62nd with his 15-over, 231, following a final round of 5-over, 77.
