Duke goaltender
Piper Hampsch recorded her sixth shutout of the season, and the Blue Devils posted their seventh overall.
How it Happened
- Duke was aggressive from the opening hit, earning a pair of penalty corners in the first five minutes. The Blue Devils fired three shots on cage, including one on the doorstep from Charlie van Oirschot, but Wake Forest keeper Ellie Todd was there to make the stops.
- The third corner proved to be the charm for the Blue Devils. Issy Carey put a fantastic sweep on frame and junior Josephine Palde pounced on the rebound from Todd's save for her second goal of the campaign and a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the contest.
- The Blue Devils continued to put pressure on the Wake Forest defense while stifling the Demon Deacon attack for much of the first 20 minutes.
- The 2023 ACC Goalkeeper of the Year, Piper Hampsch made a nice save in the 20th minute and the Blue Devils settled back into their possession game.
- Hannah Miller forced a turnover from Wake Forest in its defensive third of the field and dribbled her way into the circle to find Carey. The Weybridge, England native's shot was saved but earned the Blue Devils another penalty corner.
- This time it was van Oirschot redirecting Macy Szukics' sweep for her fifth goal of the season and a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
- Duke remained steady through the third quarter, firing four shots, and holding Wake Forest to just one. The Blue Devils nearly made it 3-0 in the final seconds of the third stanza with back-to-back shots from Logan Clouser denied by Todd.
- The Blue Devils buckled down in the final 15 minutes to secure their 15th win and seventh shutout of the year. Piper Hampsch made two saves overall. On the other end of the field, Todd had 10 saves as Duke pushed the pass throughout the 60 minutes of action.
- Duke won the corner battle, 9-1, with both goals coming as results of sweeps off Miller's inserts.
Notes
- Duke improves to 19-40 overall and 10-7 against Wake Forest. This is the Blue Devils' first ACC Tournament win over the Deacs since 1997. Wake Forest entered the game having won the past six matchups in ACC postseason action.

- Josephine Palde registered her fourth career game-winning goal. The junior has five career goals and four of them have been the decisive goals.
Quotes
Piper Hampsch on the shutout and ACC Goalkeeper of the Year
"I'm super proud. I always say shutouts and saves are a team stat. Goalkeeper of the year really means defense of the year. My team kept shots low and if they give me an easy shot to save, I'll do it. If that's what goalkeeper of the year means, I'll take that for the team."
Hampsch on how the team defense has evolved from last season
"You play in a conference like the ACC it's going to be tough, but we have great players. They're not only skilled, they're malleable and they want to learn. This is my fourth year so being able to teach them and bestow all the knowledge I have honestly is an easy task, but it's been a long journey. It takes a lot of reps and a lot of experience to get these girls where they need to be. It was a young defense last year. It's still a relatively young defense this year with some new pieces coming in and out. I'm so proud of the work our veterans have done to teach the young girls and just the flexibility of these young girls to step up in these moments.
Hampsch on watching the offense from her perspective
"Honestly, it looks so fun, but I'm more proud than anything. I'm like a proud parent watching our girls shine. All I can do when we score is throw my hands up and smile and enjoy it and come celebrate with them when they run back to me. That's how all the games end and I couldn't imagine it any other way."
