DURHAM – The Duke soccer duo of
Michelle Cooper and
Peter Stroud are set to head to St. Louis, Mo., for the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy banquet, which will be held Friday, Jan. 6 at the Missouri Athletic Club.
The MAC Hermann Trophy presented by Mungenast St. Louis Acura and Alton Toyota will be awarded to the top male and female collegiate soccer players. A live stream of the announcement will be available at
machermanntrophy.org at 7:30 p.m. (ET). Alexi Lalas, the 1991 MAC Hermann Trophy winner, U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer, and Fox Sports soccer analyst, will be the featured speaker.
Duke is the first school to have a finalist from both the men's and women's team since Stanford did so in 2017.
The finalists for the 2022 men's MAC Hermann Trophy are Levonte Johnson (Syracuse), Duncan McGuire (Creighton), and Stroud (Duke). The finalists for the women's award are Korbin Albert (Notre Dame), Cooper (Duke), and Jenna Nighswonger (Florida State).
Cooper, who hails from Clarkston, Mich., notched the best overall season in NCAA Division I soccer in 2022 with 49 points, 19 goals and 11 assists. She was the only player in the nation to rank in the top 10 in all three categories. In the NCAA stats, Cooper ranked No. 2 in points (49), tied for second in goals (19) and tied for ninth in assists (11). She was one of only two players in the country to collect 10 or more goals and assists this season. Cooper scored or assisted on an impressive 10 game-winning goals on the season for the Blue Devils. She came up big in the NCAA Tournament for the Blue Devils, scoring six goals, which tied for an NCAA Tournament best, while her 13 points were the second-most in the tournament. Cooper helped lead the Blue Devils into the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fourth straight season.
Stroud, the top player in the country in both of TopDrawerSoccer's preseason and midseason Top 100, provided a steady presence in Duke's midfield all season long. He finished the 2022 season tied for second-most points on the team (9) and set a new career-high for assists in a regular season with five. The Chester, N.J., native was named All-America First Team, became the first player in ACC history to win back-to-back ACC Midfield of the Year honors and was also named First Team All-ACC and All-South Region First Team for the second consecutive season. He helped lead the Blue Devils to their first undefeated regular season since 1999 and Duke's first appearance in the national quarterfinals for the first time since 2006.
Duke men's soccer has taken home the Hermann Trophy on seven occasions – Andrew Wenger (2011), Ali Curtis (2000, 1999), Jay Heaps (1998),
John Kerr (1986), Tom Kain (1985), Mike Jeffries (1983) and Joe Ulrich (1982). Cooper is the first Duke women's student-athlete to be named a finalist.
