Four Blue Devils Garner Preseason All-America Honors

DURHAM – Duke junior attackman Brennan O'Neill headlines the Blue Devils' four USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-Americans, garnering first-team honors as announced by the magazine Tuesday afternoon. Seniors Tyler Carpenter and Kenny Brower and sophomore Andrew McAdorey join him among the 76 players selected.
O'Neill is one of the three attackmen on the first team, joining Yale's Matt Brandau and Virginia junior Connor Shellenberger. Carpenter is the longstick midfielder on the second team, while Brower picked up third-team accolades as a close defenseman. McAdorey is an honorable mention pick to round out Duke's honorees.
O'Neill, recently selected to the United States National Team roster for the 2023 World Championship, led the Blue Devils offense in 2022 with 53 goals and 21 assists for 74 points. He ranked fourth in the ACC and 12th nationally in goals per game en route to garnering USILA All-America second team honors. He enters his third season with the Blue Devils with 129 career points from 98 goals and 31 assists. He is on pace to become the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career goals, needing just two to reach the benchmark. A two-time All-ACC pick, O'Neill is one of four Blue Devils who won gold with the U19/U21 program in Ireland this past summer.
A two-time USILA All-American, Carpenter has been a stalwart longstick midfielder during his career with the Blue Devils. A force on defense as well as on the faceoff wing, the Durham, N.C., native ranked second on the team and first among non-faceoff specialists last season with 67 ground balls. A skilled defenseman who can play both at the pole and close defense, the Durham, N.C., native also was second on the team with 17 caused turnovers. Carpenter also is a threat on offense in transition, netting three goals and dishing two assists in 2022. He picked up at least one ground ball in all 17 games last season en route to picking up his first All-ACC award. Playing in 42 career games, Carpenter has 162 ground balls and had 49 caused turnovers.
Brower, a 2022 USILA All-America third team choice, is the anchor to Duke's close defense. He has started every game Duke has played the past three seasons and had his best campaign last season with 42 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. Drawing the opponent's top attackman often over the previous two seasons, the Massapequa, N.Y., native was an All-ACC pick as a junior and ranked second at Duke among non-faceoff specialists in ground balls. He enters the 2023 season with 78 career ground balls and 32 caused turnovers. This past summer, Brower was the defensive MVP for the U.S. U-21 National Team at the Junior World Championship in Limerick, Ireland. He was instrumental in the U.S. capturing gold with a 12-10 victory over Canada.
A USILA All-America honorable mention pick in 2022, McAdorey returns after a stellar rookie season. He started all 17 games on the first midfield and finished the year with 39 points from 23 goals and 16 assists. Registering at least one point in 16 of his 17 outings, McAdorey's 39 points are the most by a true freshman midfielder in Duke history. The Manorville, N.Y., native bested Scott Diggs' 31 points his rookie season in 1996. They are the lone two Blue Devil freshman midfielders to record 30 points in their first collegiate seasons.
The Blue Devils open the 2023 season Feb. 4 against Bellarmine at noon in Koskinen Stadium. Duke welcomes High Point three days later, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m., before hitting the road for the first time.
