DURHAM – The Duke field hockey team moved up two spots to No. 16 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches poll as announced by the organization Tuesday. The Blue Devils started the season ranked 18th in the preseason poll.
Northwestern and North Carolina stayed put at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, while Maryland jumped to No. 3. Michigan and Louisville round out the top five in the first poll since the 2022 season started.
The Blue Devils started their campaign with a pair of top 20 victories over then No. 8 Rutgers and No. 16 Saint Joseph's at the Battle on the Banks. Duke defeated the Scarlet Knights, 2-1, in a penalty stroke shootout and then added a 1-0 double overtime triumph over the Hawks to return to Durham, 2-0.
This past weekend, the Blue Devils lost a pair of games to No. 1 Northwestern and No. 3 Maryland at the annual ACC/Big 10 Cup. Duke has eight more top-20 opponents remaining on its regular season slate, including this weekend's match against No. 21 William & Mary.
The Blue Devils are buoyed by a depth of talent on offense. Four different players have scored a goal this season, while sophomore
Issy Carey and senior
Hannah Miller both have a goal and an assist to their names.
Defensively, junior goaltender
Piper Hampsch anchors the backline for the Blue Devils. The three-year starter in the cage leads the ACC and ranks 15th nationally in saves per game at 7.0. Her .737 save percentage is third in the conference.
Playing in front of Hampsch is a talented group that includes first-year starters
Mary Harkins, Shelby Bumgarner and
Megan Maransky.
The Blue Devils are excited to welcome alumni back to town in conjunction with the ribbon cutting and dedication of the new Jim Sabiston Fieldhouse as Duke makes its home debut against Appalachian State and William & Mary. The Blue Devils battle the Mountaineers, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m., and welcome the Tribe to Williams Field Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
