DURHAM β Boston College scored in the 25th minute and held off a late charge from the Blue Devils to steal a 1-0 road victory in ACC field hockey action on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Friday night.
Margo Carlin netted the lone goal for the 18th-ranked Eagles as they improve to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in league action. Duke, ranked 20th, falls to 4-5 on the year and 0-2 against ACC foes.
How It Happened
- Boston College earned a penalty corner with just over five minutes to play in the second quarter. Sarah Johnson's sweep off the insert from Carlin was blocked by the Blue Devils, but the rebound fell to Carlin right in front of the cage. As she was falling, Carlin backhanded it past Duke goalkeeper Piper Hampsch for the 1-0 advantage.
- Both teams battled in the center of the field for much of the first quarter with Boston College getting one shot off from its one penalty corner.
- Duke and the Eagles found their way into the circles more often in the second period, combining for four shots overall. The Blue Devils' best chance of the game came in the final minute of the stanza as Charlie van Oirschot weaved her way through the Boston College defense and fired a shot towards the back post. Eagle goaltender Emily Gillespie kicked it away to keep her shutout hopes alive.
- The Blue Devil offense came alive in the final four minutes, earning three penalty corners and firing three shots. Van Oirschot had a great look from one penalty corner, but Gillespie stood tall in the cage to pick up her second shutout of the season.
- Duke was not without opportunities inside the scoring circle during the game, but just missed connecting cleanly on the shots.
- Boston College finished the night with a narrow 7-5 edge in shots. Duke won the penalty corner battle, 3-2. Hampsch finished her night with two saves in 57 minutes of action. Gillespie had three stops.
