DURHAM –Former Duke wrestling standouts
Josh Finesilver and
Mitch Finesilver are set to hit the mat on the world stage at the 2022 World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Serbia this week. The event runs through Sept. 18 with Josh and Mitch representing Israel at 70 and 74 kg in the freestyle division.
Additionally, 2021-22 Duke assistant coach Ethan Ramos is the No. 7 seed at 86 kg. Ramos, wrestling for Puerto Rico wrestles Rakhim Magamadov from France in his round of 16 opening match Sept. 15. A 2015 NCAA All-American, Ramos compiled a 106-39 career record at North Carolina.
Josh, a four-time NCAA qualifier for the Blue Devils, opens up the 70 kg division in the qualifying round Sept. 15 against No. 5 seed Amir Yazdani of Iran. The winner advances to the round of eight versus the winner between Cape Verde's Anthony Sterling Wesley vs. Ilyas Bekbulatov of Uzbekistan. Qualification round wrestling begins Sept. 15 at 4:30 a.m. (ET) and runs until 8:30 a.m. (ET).
This is Josh's first foray on the world stage as a post-collegiate wrestler. He finished his Blue Devil career as one of three Blue Devils in program history to qualify for four separate NCAA Championships. He compiled a 79-45 career record across three different weight classes. In addition, Finesilver beat a career-high six ranked opponents in 2022.
Mitch enters the event as the No. 8 seed and has the potential to meet up with top-seeded and fellow American Kyle Dake in the quarterfinals. Getting started a day later than Josh in the 74kg division, Mitch opens action in the round of 16 against Sagar Jaglan of India. Action gets underway Sept. 16 at 4:30 a.m. (ET).
A 2019 All-American, Mitch was a four-time NCAA qualifier during his illustrious career at Duke. He finished his career with a 95-30 record to rank eighth on the Duke career chart. Mitch was a four-time All-ACC honoree and captured the ACC title at 149 pounds in 2019.
