Mohammed Makes Team of the Week, Duke Ranked No. 17

DURHAM – Sophomore midfielder/forward Shakur Mohammed has been named to TopDrawerSoccer's Team of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Mohammed earns a Team of the Week recognition for the first time in his career at Duke following a brace in 66 minutes of action against Milwaukee last Sunday and 84 minutes of action in the Blue Devils' win in their season-opener against San Diego. Both of his goals against the Panthers were scored from outside the 18-yard box. The sophomore demonstrated his scoring prowess by slotting home one goal with each foot.
The Kumasi, Ghana native recorded career highs in both goals and points in the Milwaukee contest and has nearly matched his goal output from his ACC Freshman of the Year campaign when he ended the year with three goals. Mohammed was named as the John Rennie Nike Invitational MVP and was joined by Antino Lopez, Peter Stroud, and Eliot Hamill on the All-Tournament Team.
Duke Ranked No. 17 by United Soccer Coaches
Duke men's soccer dropped to No. 17 in the country on Tuesday in the United Soccer Coaches rankings released on Tuesday following two victories to open the season. The Blue Devils made the top-10 in the TopDrawerSoccer and College Soccer News weekly polls on Monday, coming in at No. 6 and No. 7 respectively.
The Blue Devils finished undefeated in their first weekend of play after two wins in the John Rennie Nike Invitational earned the hosts the tournament title. Duke knocked off San Diego 1-0 in their season-opener last Friday and followed up with a 4-0 victory against Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon. Scotty Taylor scored the lone goal against the Toreros in the first half and a strong effort by Duke's defense, led by goalkeeper Eliot Hamill, moved Duke to 1-0-0 on the year.
The season's tally for shutouts was quickly increased on Sunday afternoon, as Hamill logged his second clean sheet in as many games. On the offensive end, the effort came from all over the field for the Blue Devils, with four different players recording an assist. The goalscoring was led by Shakur Mohammed's two strikes and complimented by Nick Pariano's first goal of the season and freshman defender Axel Gudbjornsson scoring his first goal as a Blue Devil.
Duke returns to Koskinen Stadium on Thursday evening, Sept. 1, when they welcome the Michigan Wolverines for their third and final game of the Blue Devils' early-season homestand. First touch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
