DURHAM – A second-half surge by the 12th-ranked Duke men's soccer team helped the host Blue Devils win the
John Rennie Nike Invitational on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 victory against Milwaukee inside Koskinen Stadium. Sophomore midfielder
Shakur Mohammed scored two goals to lead the offensive effort and goalkeeper
Eliot Hamill turned in his second shutout in as many games.
How It Happened
- Duke opened its ledger with a goal slotted home by Shakur Mohammed in the 19th minute. The strike was set up by freshman Axel Gudbjornsson and junior Nick Pariano.
- A second goal opportunity sailed just wide less than a minute later when Scotty Taylor's header barely missed ending up in the back of the net.
- The first of two lightning delays slowed Duke's momentum for the remainder of the first half with the Blue Devils holding on to their 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
- Duke scored twice in the first 15 minutes of play in the second half to open up a 3-0 lead, with Pariano scoring his first goal of the season and Mohammed netting his second of the game.
- Gudbjornsson scored his first goal as a Blue Devil in the 71st minute off a corner kick for Duke's fourth and final goal of the afternoon.
- The Blue Devils' defense weathered four Panthers shots in the second half to finish off their second shutout in as many games in the 2022 campaign.
- Hamil made three saves en route to his second clean sheet of the season. The veteran goalkeeper had six shutouts last season.
Notes
- Duke won the John Rennie Nike Invitational via a yellow card tiebreak after finishing with the same goal differential, goals allowed and goals for as Elon.
- Shakur Mohammed was named MVP of the tournament, with teammates Peter Stroud, Antino Lopez and Eliot Hamill joining the sophomore on the All-Tournament Team.
- Mohammed, reigning ACC Freshman of the Year, has almost matched his goal output of his 2021 season, when he finished with three goals for the year.
- Stroud recorded his second assist in as many games after setting up the Blue Devils' only goal of the game on Friday night against San Diego.
Quotes
- "He's dynamic. He's hungry, aggressive, talented and creative. We're very luck to have him. Super kid and I just love how hard he works. As you see him in the game today, he works that hard in practice every day. He's quite an amazing young man and a great player." – Duke head coach John Kerr on sophomore midfielder Shakur Mohammed.
- "It's great. It's awesome. That's what we wanted to do, we wanted to win. It's good to get four goals today after seeing the results before the game. And to keep two clean sheets is massive. It's great practice and exactly what we wanted. We didn't play great but it's something to build off of and we got the job done." – Duke junior midfielder Nick Pariano on winning the John Renner Nike Invitational.
