DURHAM β The Duke field hockey team officially opens the 2022 campaign with a pair of contests in the Battle on the Banks hosted by Rutgers. The No. 18 Blue Devils take on the No. 8 Scarlet Knights Aug. 26 at 1 p.m., and No. 16 Saint Joseph's Aug. 27 at 2 p.m.

The Opening Hit
- Duke starts the 2022 season with four consecutive road games. The Blue Devils start the season ranked 18th in the NFHCA preseason poll.
- The Blue Devils played a pair of exhibitions against VCU and North Carolina, going 1-1. Duke bested the Rams, 3-1, before falling to the Tar Heels.
- Head coach Pam Bustin enters her 12th season at the helm and welcomes nine newcomers to the program. Bustin is one win away from becoming the 19th Division I head coach to win 300 games. She currently ranks 11th among active coaches in career victories.
- Sophomore Logan Clouser tied for the team lead in scoring last season, coming on strong late in the year. She had a team-high five goals and registered two in the exhibition games this preseason.
- Junior Piper Hampsch is back in the cage for the Blue Devils. With 161 saves to her name, Hampsch ranks 13th on the Duke career chart and is on pace to become the 10th Blue Devil to amass 200 career saves.

Scouting Rutgers
- Rutgers enters the 2022 season ranked eighth in the NFHCA preseason poll. The Scarlet Knights are coming off the most successful season in program history with a 19-4 overall record and the Big Ten Tournament title. Rutgers returns two of its top three point scorers from last season, but lost 11 players from last year's team.
- Sophia Howard steps into the cage after the departure of All-American Gianna Glatz. A quartet of seniors (Maggie Lamb, Amanda Beck, Isabella Mancini and Carly Snarski) all played in double-digit games last season and will look to step into larger roles this season. Led by Meredith Civico in her 11th season, the Scarlet Knights welcome eight newcomers.

Scouting Saint Joseph's
- Saint Joseph's starts its 2022 season ranked 16th in the NFHCA preseason poll and as the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic 10 title. The Hawks returned to the top of the Atlantic 10 last season and look to grab their fifth title in six seasons.Β
- The Hawks landed four individuals - seniors Katy Benton and Freke van Tilburg, junior Manu Ghigliotti and sophomore Sol Borenszstein β to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team. Tilburg was a second team All-American in 2021, while Ghigliotti was the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year.

About the Blue Devils
- Duke enters the 2022 season featuring a roster of 26 players, including nine newcomers. The Blue Devils welcome six freshmen to the team and three transfer athletes. Duke has 41 percent of its scoring from last year back and will feature a new backline following the graduation of Grace Kim, Caroline Hannan and Lexi Davidson. Piper Hampsch is back to anchor the Blue Devils in the cage.
- Offensively, sophomore Logan Clouser returns following a solid rookie season. She led all Blue Devils with five goals and tied for the team lead with 13 points. She showed well during the first two exhibitions and will be looked to as a leader on offense. Hannah Miller is the veteran attacker and team captain and enters the season with 44 career points, while a host of other Blue Devils have the ability to be top scorers as well.
- Defensively, Duke is filling holes left by a quartet of veterans. The Blue Devils will have an entirely new backline and will be bolstered by the experience of graduate student Raphaelle van de Walle from the Netherlands. Senior Mary Harkins and sophomores Shelby Bumgarner and Megan Maransky will look to build off their experiences this past spring in a starting role this year.
