Guterding and USA Take Silver in World Games
Duke All-American attackman took his skills to a new game on the world stage last week, competing for the U.S. Men's National Team in the new sixes discipline at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Ala. The United States went unbeaten in pool play, advancing to the Gold Medal game against Canada. The U.S. ended its winning streak there as Canada nabbed gold and Guterding and the U.S., won silver.
Sixes is a fast-paced version of the sport played on a smaller field (70 x 36 meters), with fewer players (6-v-6), a condensed game length (four 8-minute quarters) and a 30-second shot clock.
Guterding finished the tournament with 9 goals and three assists over the course of five games. He registered four goals and two assists in pool play before catching fire in the placement game against Japan. In a tight affair, Guterding notched four goals on five shots to help the U.S. to the 17-12 victory and a spot in the title game. He added one goal and one assist in the setback to Canada.
Seven Blue Devils Selected to PLL All-Star Game
The Blue Devils have shined in the first half of the PLL season with seven being named All-Stars, including three in the starting lineup. The PLL All-Star Game presented by OutSystems takes place at Gillette Stadium July 16 at 3:30 p.m. It will be televised live by ESPN. Following the game, a selection of players, including Jones, Giles-Harris, Manley and Costabile will compete in the skills challenge, at 6:30 on ESPN+.
Headlining the list are defensemen
Michael Manley and
JT Giles-Harris and midfielder
Myles Jones as starters. The reserve selections include
CJ Costabile,
Brad Smith,
Michael Sowers, and
Cade Van Raaphorst.
Giles-Harris and Manley are the bookends of the Chrome defense with Giles-Harris in his inaugural season as a professional – he missed the 2021 campaign to injury – and Manley playing his 11th season of professional lacrosse.
The duo is the key cog to Chrome's league-leading defense that has allowed just 52 goals and owns a +13 goal differential. Manley and Giles-Harris are tied for fourth in the PLL in caused turnovers. Jones has 10 points – 5 goals, one two-pointer and three assists, as he looks to help Redwoods get back on track in the second half of the season.
Costabile leads all long stick midfielders with 19 ground balls and has gone 9-of-18 at the faceoff dot. He also has seven points on the year and became just the fifth long pole to record a hat trick in professional lacrosse history.
Smith has 10 points for Whipsnakes, who are tied for the top of the standings with Chrome and Atlas, while Sowers has 15 in his four outings this season. Van Raaphorst anchors Atlas' close defense with five caused turnovers and 11 ground balls. He also has a two-pointer to his name this season.
