DURHAM – Five incoming members of the Duke men's lacrosse team have been selected for the 17th annual Under Armour All-America Lacrosse game set for July 30 in Baltimore, Md.
Set to compete in the 17th annual Senior All-America game are Charles Balsamo (Chaminde), Henry Bard (Lower Merion), Luke Engelke (Pingry), Charlie Johnson (Brunswick) and Max Sloat (Sacred Heart Prep). They are among the 44 players selected by a committee made up of the nation's most knowledgeable figures in high school lacrosse.
Balsamo is a left-handed attackman from Chaminade High School comes to Duke as one of the nation's top recruits. He has been a part of the USA Lacrosse National Teams during his scholastic career and served as a captain for Chaminade this past season. He led the Flyers his senior year with 49 goals and 23 assists for 72 points for a 4.24 points per game average.
Bard, a longstick midfielder, had a decorated scholastic career for Lower Merion. A three-time Under Armour Underclass All-American, Bard drew the matchup against the opponent's best attackman in every game. He was named first team All-Central League and All-Main Line and was voted the Aces' Most Valuable Player.
Engelke is coming off a strong senior season for The Pingry School. A faceoff specialist who also stays on the field to play offense, Engelke won 71 percent of his faceoffs in 2022 and added 32 goals and 31 assists for 63 points. In three seasons, Engelke won 67 percent of his faceoffs and contributed 69 goals and 62 assists for 131 points.
One of the top defensemen in the class of 2022, Johnson was an anchor for Brunswick's defense throughout his career. The Bruins finished this season ranked fourth in Inside Lacrosse's high school national rankings, posting a 14-3 overall record.
A native of San Mateo, Calif., Sloat also is a left-handed attackman for Sacred Heart Prep. He was a four-year starter for the Gators, garnering Under Armour Underclassman All-America honors in 2019. As a senior, Sloat tallied 99 goals and 16 assists for 115 points in 21 games. The Gators finished the year with a 21-3 overall record, falling to St. Ignatius in the playoffs.
The game's participants, which have been announced in four waves, will be divided into North and South teams in advance of the event. The girls' game is set for 5:30 p.m., with the boys following at 8 p.m., at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field. Both games will be aired live on ESPNU.
