DURHAM – The Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement (ACE) Program will run immersive summer service experiences for the seventh year in 2022. This summer, ACE will return to in-person programming with a new, US-based program in addition to offering four virtual international service programs.
A collaboration between Duke and Stanford Athletics, the ACE Program provides funding for accepted Duke and Stanford student-athletes to participate in three-week, immersive summer service experiences with an international community partner. The program is made possible by the generous support of David Rubenstein and Peter and Helen Bing.
The ACE program is a reflection of Duke and Stanford's shared mission of public service and desire to collaborate with peer institutions. To date, ACE remains the first and only two-university international service program designed specifically for student-athletes.
ACE SUMMER 2022 EXPERIENCE:
This summer's programs are a result of the efforts of the ACE staff, ACE Ambassador alumni and community partners working together to bring ACE back to in-person programming, as well as providing meaningful virtual service experiences. Through ACE Summer 2022 programs, 22 Duke and Stanford student-athletes will have the opportunity to participate in both in-person and virtual international experiences where they will work on collaborative service projects, form relationships across the Duke and Stanford athletic community and connect with community partners around the world.
Six student-athletes will participate in ACE in Colorado, ACE's new, in-person, US-based program, where they will engage in conservation and environmental stewardship efforts in local communities. The student-athletes will live, train, serve and learn together for the entirety of the three-week program. The Colorado program continues ACE's mission of delivering global experiences to student-athletes through discussion and engagement on global conservation efforts.
In addition, 16 ACE participants will be part of the four virtual service programs focused on supporting community-based organizations located in Peru, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam. Virtual programs allow ACE the opportunity to continue to offer impactful summer service experiences for Duke and Stanford student-athletes in the midst of the on-going global COVID-19 pandemic as well as provide a flexible option for student-athletes to engage in service experiences. Some of these student-athletes will complete ACE while living on campus training and taking summer school classes while others will participate from their hometowns located around the world.
After their ACE experiences, student-athletes have the opportunity to give back to the program by serving as ACE Ambassadors and promoting the program among their teammates and peers and helping the next ACE team prepare for their experience. 27 past ACE participants volunteered to serve as ACE Ambassadors during the 2021-2022 academic year, representing the 2019 - 2021 cohorts.
WHAT ARE THEY DOING AND WHEN:
ACE participants will work closely with program leaders based across the world and in Colorado who will facilitate team building, encourage meaningful opportunities for group reflection, manage community partner relationships, offer mentorship and support during project work, track project progress and organize cultural enrichment opportunities.

"I am excited to participate in a summer program, especially because as student-athletes, study abroad is not a possibility during the school year. I know I will grow as an athlete, student, and person through participating in a service project. I'm eager to try something new and learn about climate change and different cultures in a hands-on way." – Phoebe Brinker, Duke women's golf, ACE in Colorado
"ACE is an incredible opportunity to expand my understanding of new cultures and pressing issues to become a more informed American and global citizen." – Zach Barry, Duke men's cross country and track & field, ACE in Colorado
"I believe that participating in ACE this summer will be worth it because I want to help change the world and help others strive to be the best of their ability. I am also really looking forward to making new friendships at Duke, Stanford, and with the Vietnamese college coaches and students!" – Seamus Harding Jr., Duke men's swimming & diving, ACE in Place Vietnam
