DURHAM - The Duke women's lacrosse team will take on Johns Hopkins in an NCAA first round matchup Friday at 3 p.m., in College Park, Md.
The Blue Devils (15-3) and Blue Jays (10-8) received at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament. The squads will square off Friday at 3 p.m., in College Park, Md. Host and No. 2 seed Maryland (17-1) will face the advancing team Sunday at 2:30 p.m., with a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals on the line.
Duke and Johns Hopkins meet for the ninth time in program history and for the first time since 2015 with the Blue Devils holding a 7-1 series record.
Duke makes its 21st NCAA Tournament appearance and its second consecutive. The Blue Devils own a 26-20 overall record on the big stage that includes 16 quarterfinal and seven semifinal appearances. Duke last made the semifinals in 2015 and owns a 12-game win streak in first-round games. The Blue Devils have reached the quarterfinals in 12 of their past 13 appearances and the semifinals in six of their past 13.
The championship provides for a field of 29 teams to compete in a single-elimination tournament. Sixteen conference champions qualify automatically; the balance of the field is selected at-large by the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Committee. The top eight teams in the 29-team bracket for the championship are seeded. The top three teams receive first-round byes.
