NOTRE DAME, Ind. –Seventh-ranked Notre Dame outscored No. 9 Duke 9-3 in the second half to rally to a 16-14 victory in ACC men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Arlotta Stadium.
Duke falls to 11-6 overall and 3-3 against league foes, while Notre Dame moves to 8-5 overall and captured a share of the ACC title with a 5-1 mark in the conference.
The Blue Devils put together a phenomenal first half of lacrosse, taking an 11-7 lead into the locker rom. Junior
Dyson Williams had four goals and an assist in the first half, while
Owen Caputo had two goals and two assists to help lead the offense. Both were held scoreless in the second half to finish the afternoon with five and four points, respectively.
Brennan O'Neill had three goals and an assist for four points.
Trailing 4-2 after the first quarter, Duke scored five unanswered and nine of the next 12 goals to take the four-goal lead into halftime. Five different players scored in that stretch with Williams notching four of the nine goals.
Defensively, Duke held Notre Dame to just 12 shots in the first half and forced eight turnovers. Sophomore
Jake Naso won 12-of-19 faceoffs, including 8-of-12 in the second quarter as the Blue Devils dominated the time of possession.
The momentum stayed in Duke's favor to start the third quarter when freshman
Andrew McAdorey scored a last-second man-up goal to give Duke the 12-7 advantage. However, the Blue Devils' offensive success slowed down as they went scoreless for the next 10:16.
With Duke unable to pull away, Notre Dame ended it's 13-minute drought to make it 12-8. The Irish continued to chip away at the Duke lead, scoring four of the next six goals to make it a 14-11 game with 15 minutes remaining.
Notre Dame was dominant at the faceoff in the third period, winning all seven restarts. The Fighting Irish rode their wave of confidence into the fourth quarter and quickly made it a one-goal game just 4:36 into the stanza.
Notre Dame rookie Jake Taylor continued his stellar afternoon, tying the game on a Chris Kavanagh assist with 5:48 remaining. Eric Dobson scored 32 seconds later to give the Irish its first lead since it was 4-3 early in the second quarter.
Taylor finished the day with six goals, while Chris Kavanagh had one goal and one assist. Pat Kavanagh had a goal and four assists.
Duke found some success at the faceoff and defensively, but turnovers ultimately doomed the Blue Devils as they gave the ball back to Notre Dame seven times in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils had a couple of looks at goal, but only took three shots in the fourth period.
Naso went 16-of-32 at the faceoff dot and picked up 10 ground balls. In goal,
Mike Adler had 17 saves for the Blue Devils, while Liam Entenmann had 12 stops.
Duke will await its NCAA Tournament fate Sunday evening with the NCAA selection show airing at 9 p.m., on ESPNU.
