DURHAM – Duke men's golf senior
Quinn Riley birdied five consecutive holes on the front nine and played bogey free, earning one of five qualifying spots during a local qualifier for the 2022 U.S. Open on Tuesday at the Duke University GC in Durham.
This same week, the senior from Raleigh rose to No. 1 in the collegiate rankings for Advocates Pro Golf Association (APGA) Tour, which is a non-profit organization with the mission to prepare African Americans and other minority golfers to compete and win at the highest level of professional golf.
Riley shot 5-under 67 on the Blue Devils' home course and was one of five golfers in the field of 84 to advance out of the local qualifying stage in the quest to play in the 122nd
U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., June 16-19. The senior birdied holes 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 on Tuesday, making the turn at 5-under 31. He was even on the back, including a dazzling par save on the 18th, getting up and down from right of the green by draining a 15-foot par putt.
Those players who advance out of the 110 local qualifying sites will join a group of locally exempt players in final qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes at nine sites across the country in late May and early June.
Riley finished a stroke back of Korn Ferry Tour player Zach Edmondson and University of North Carolina's Ryan Gerard, who each carded 6-under 66. Two others -- Viraj Garewal from Davidson College and junior golfer Sihan Sandu also advanced.
Tuesday's result continues a strong, late season push by Riley, who was the individual medalist at the Stitch Intercollegiate in April at Lonnie Poole GC in Cary and led the Blue Devils with a top-20 finish at the ACC Championship last week in Panama City Beach.
AGPA Tour events begin in late June with the Tour Championship contested in mid-August. The top five collegiate players in the final APGA collegiate rankings earn entry into all APGA Tour events through May 2023, including travel costs, plus exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament.
