COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore
Ian Siebers fired a 1-under 70 in Wednesday's final round and Duke shot its lowest team score of the tournament, but the Blue Devils finished just five strokes shy of fifth place and failed to advance from the NCAA Columbus Regional.
Duke shot a 4-over 288 on Wednesday, paced by Siebers' 70 and 1-over 72 scores from sophomore
Jimmy Zheng and freshman
Kelly Chinn. The Blue Devils, who entered the day just three back off the final qualifying spot, finished at 15-over par for the tournament, which was good for eighth on a tightly packed team leaderboard.
"They knew they were in striking distance," said head coach
Jamie Green. "You do the best you can to control yourself and our guys did a good job of that. That put us in the hunt. We noticed them playing with a sense of urgency, and urgency in a good way. We did a good job of it today, but that sense of urgency needs to start on the first tee on the first day."
Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech tied for the regional championship at 10-under par, followed by host Ohio State (+4), Arkansas (+7) and East Tennessee (+10) as the top five teams to advance to the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz., next week.
Zheng was Duke's regional leader, as the sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand finished tied for 23rd at 3-over 216 on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State Golf Club. He shot rounds of 71 and 73 before Wednesday's 72. After going out in 2-over 38, he was steady coming home in the final round with a birdie on the par-5 12th, along with eight pars for a back-nine 34.
Siebers finished one shot back of his classmate, good for a tie for 29th at 4-over 217, including his low round of the regional on Wednesday. The Bellevue, Wash., native was spotless on the front, pouring in birdies on the par-4 third and par-3 eighth to make the turn in 2-under 34. His one blemish on the back was a bogey on the par-4 14th en route to his 1-under 71.
Chinn played 2-under over his final 13 holes on Wednesday to card a 1-over 72 and finish tied with Siebers for 29th at 4-over 217. The freshman from Great Falls, Va., shook off three bogeys over his first five holes and drained a birdie putt on the par-5 sixth to jump-start his bogey-free finish.
Freshman
Luke Sample and senior
Quinn Riley each finished tied for 49th at 8-over to cap Duke's regional scoring. Sample shot 3-over 74 on Wednesday, including a stretch of 1-under over his final seven holes, while Riley posted a 4-over 75 in the final round.
For the regional, Duke paced the field in par-3 scoring at 6-over par, led by Zheng's 1-under on the par-3's, which was tied for the regional low. The Blue Devils' 178 pars for the regional were second most in the field, trailing Oklahoma State's 184.
"I'm proud of the effort overall," said Green. "Jimmy performed solidly all week, and Ian got it under par today. It's not an easy golf course to get under par. There were some teams that got it done today -- some 2-unders and 3-unders on the board -- had we done that, we would have advanced."
