DURHAM – For the third consecutive season and fourth time in program history, the Duke rowing team will compete at the NCAA Championships, as the No. 14-ranked Blue Devils received an at-large bid to the 2022 regatta in Sarasota, Fla.
The 2022 NCAA Rowing Championships will be held May 27-29 at Nathan Benderson Park. Duke has made three prior appearances at the regatta, finishing 17th overall with 45 points at the 2016 NCAA Championships, 16th with 47 points in 2019 and 16th with 55 points in 2021.
"We're so excited to represent our school, our alums and our full team at the 2022 NCAA Championships," said head coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno. "It feels like the field is faster and tougher every single year, so we are humbled and honored by this invite. Im so proud of the hard work displayed weekend after weekend by this team. They are all in it together and fully focused on making program history. We can't wait!"
At the 2021 regatta, Duke placed first in the Second Varsity Eight C Final, marking the program's third all-time win in a C Final. The Varsity Eight took fourth in its C Final, while the Varsity Four finished third in the Petite Final.
The Blue Devils are coming off a bronze-medal performance at the ACC Championship in Clemson, S.C., this past weekend. Duke tallied 82 team points, just shy of Syracuse's second-place total of 83. The Second Varsity Four boat became just the second crew in program history to win a gold medal at the ACC regatta, clocking a two-kilometer time of 7:11.587. The Varsity Four collected silver, while the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight each earned bronze in their respective Grand Finals.
Duke was one of 11 at-large selections for the NCAA Championships alongside Brown, California, Michigan, Oregon State, Penn, Rutgers, USC, Syracuse, Washington and Yale. The 11 programs that earned automatic bids by winning their conference championships were Boston University (Patriot League), Gonzaga (West Coast), Jacksonville (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), Northeastern (Colonial Athletic Association), Ohio State (Big Ten), Princeton (Ivy League), Rhode Island (Atlantic 10), SMU (AAC), Stanford (Pac-12), Texas (Big 12) and Virginia (ACC).
The Blue Devils enter the championships as the No. 12 seed in the Varsity Four, No. 14 in the Second Varsity Eight and No. 15 in the Varsity Eight.
