COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 13 Duke fell to second-ranked Maryland, 19-6, Sunday afternoon in NCAA second round action in College Park, Md.
With the loss, the Blue Devils close their season 16-4 overall. Its 16 wins are tied for third in program history.
Duke was outshot 37-13 and lost the draw control matchup, 18-10, for the game.
The Blue Devils were led by graduate student Catriona Barry with three points from two goals and an assist. She closes her Duke career with 193 career points to rank 11th in program history. Her 93 points this spring are third in Duke history.
Sophomore Katie Keller added two goals, while senior Anna Callahan added two points and Katie DeSimone one goal.
Maryland jumped out to a 4-0 start midway through the opening quarter as it connected on four of its five shots. Barry found Keller charging to the cage for a nice scoop shot to put the Blue Devils on the board (4-1) at 6:24 just before a Maryland foul set up Duke's first free-position attempt of the day. DeSimone settled in on the eight-meter and ripped one right past Terp goalie Emily Sterling. Trailing by two (4-2) at 5:13, Barry pulled Duke within one with her 55th goal of the season (4-3).
With the Terps holding a 5-3 at the quarter break, Maryland extend its advantage to 6-3 45 seconds into the second period. Barry pulled Duke within two again, fining the back of the net for her second of the game and Anna Callahan fed Keller 90 seconds later to keep the Blue Devils within striking distance at, 7-5. The Terps responded in a big way, going on an 8-0 run to close the half leading, 15-5.
Maryland extended its lead (16-5) to start the third before both offenses struggled to find a rhythm. Callahan connected on a free-position attempt for her 22nd goal of the year to end the third frame with Maryland up, 17-6. The Terrapins tallied two goals to close the contest in the final 15 minutes.
Senior Sophia LeRose started in goal and tallied six saves between the pipes. Graduate student Chase Henriquez added two off the bench.
The Terrapins were led by Libby May with five goals.
